2024's Warhammer: Space Marine 2 was a big success, and the company that owns the franchise, Games Workshop, is now looking to expand its reach in video games and create another hit title. At least that's the ambition, and it's something the company says is "not a given."

Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree said in the company's latest earnings report that video game revenue for the company came from "established games" and royalty income from the launches of Space Marine 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks.

"We recognize that successes like these for Warhammer are not a given in the world of video games. Clearly we are looking for the next one. We remain cautious when forecasting royalty income," Rountree said.

Space Marine 2 was developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, with Games Workshop making money on the game from its collection of royalty fees, in addition to any other potential business arrangement it had in place. The same is true for Speed Freeks, a combat racing game, which was developed by Caged Element and published by Plaion.

Space Marine 2 quickly sold more than 4.5 million copies at launch in 2024, though developer Saber said it didn't need to sell that many copies to be labeled a success. Sales numbers for Speed Freeks, however, have not been disclosed. The free-to-play early access game peaked at 2,700 concurrent users on Steam and has a "Mostly Positive" aggregate review rating.

In terms of upcoming Warhammer games, Bulwark Studios is developing Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II, though a release date has not been announced as of yet.
