Legendary rocker Jon Stevens has opened up about his terrifying brush with death in 2009

The Noiseworks frontman's dramatic health episode began after a routine checkup uncovered a blocked artery which led to life saving open heart surgery.

'I'm very, very lucky, and very grateful, I distinctly remember lying in hospital going, 'I'm not going to meet my grandchildren.' I didn't have any grandchildren at that point!' he said.

The 64-year-old New Zealand-born rocker discussed the frightening health scare in a new interview in The Australian on Monday.

Elsewhere in the chat he explained that just ahead of going into the operating theatre doctors had told him he was about to 'drop dead' and had only days to live.

He continued: 'I was elated because I was blessed that I found out [during a check up] and [I] didn't have a heart attack. Something bad didn't happen. It was actually the warning.'

The operation that saved Jon life involved a triple by-pass in which surgery replaced his block arteries with healthy arteries.

Jon, who is currently touring with Noiseworks, added that he has a message to his male fans who might be reluctant to keep a close on their health.

'I've been saying that since way back then: get checked up,' he said.

'You check your car; it's pretty basic stuff. But men, we're proud – or stupid. [laughs] I don't know.

'But your health is your wealth; that's a very true saying. I always say, "Listen, if you've got kids, or you've got grandkids – you owe it to them to be around as long as you can."'

Jon had a second health scare in 2022 and received a stent to treat a blocked heart artery.

He became an ambassador the Heart Foundation 'Give With Heart Day' the same year.

The '80s heartthrob first rose to fame after joining the Sydney pub band Noiseworks in 1986.
