A new trailer has now been released at Warner Bros.' CinemCon panel, where ScreenRant was in attendance. Before the footage was shown, Cruise arrived on stage with Iñárritu, where they discussed the importance of movie theaters, and the director described the actor's performance as "fearless... another kind of fearless." Iñárritu also hinted that this was the most challenging role of Cruise's career. Check out a description of the footage below:
An old Tom Cruise in makeup sitting in a fancy bedroom. He feeds his cat. He looks outside his window. He takes his cat to the vet. Cruise is walking around in his pajamas with a baseball bat repeating what his dad once told him. Cruise takes a call from a scientist named Sandy Clarkson, who is seen in a snowy environment. Clarkson explains that the water has been bubbling because of a leak, and threatens the integrity of the entire ice shell in Greenland. Cruise gets angry at the news and threatens to lay off staff/call the president. John Goodman plays the president and meets with Cruise. The president questions how this got past Cruise. They say millions, maybe billions are going to be displaced because of mistakes made by Cruise’s company and digging for oil. Quick montage is shown as Cruise quotes his grandfather, and other cast members are seen like Sandra Hüller and Jesse Plemons and Riz Ahmed. The president drops a bomb on the ice. Cruise looks confident as he says, “The story is yet to be told.” Cruise is bathing his cat, then the logo appears.
After reprising the heroic roles of Peter "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick and Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Cruise is now playing a far messier character in Digger, where the actions that he and his oil company took are on the cusp of destroying the world. Walking around in his pajamas, carrying a baseball bat, and repeating his dad's words is also a far cry from Maverick and Ethan.
Cruise has previously worked with a wide range of acclaimed directors before, including Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and Paul Thomas Anderson, but this is his first collaboration with Iñárritu. The footage description teases how The Revenant and Birdman director is pushing Cruise into new territory with a performance unlike anything the action star has done before.
