The Lord of the Rings has some genuinely nefarious characters scattered throughout its text, but few instill the same kind of fear in readers and watchers as the Nazgul. These wraiths were once men, corrupted by the power of the nine rings granted to them by Sauron, before eventually succumbing and serving the dark lord himself.
When we're introduced to them in The Fellowship of the Ring (in the films), they take the form of black riders on horses with red eyes, screeching and killing their way across Middle-earth. Now, they're back and more terrifying than ever, thanks to a new physical release that should really catch the attention of die hard fans.
Over on the website for Pure Arts, the store has just listed a new item, The Lord of the Rings Nazgul King Art Mask Exclusive Edition. Limited to just 250 individual copies, it's an impossibly detailed and hyperrealistic design made in silicone, that really does look of a similar (or even better) quality to those made by big budget movie prop departments.
Interestingly, the designers have designed to go with the spectral form we only see when Frodo is facing The Nine while wearing the One Ring, and that gives it a much more stark and frightening look than anything we'd otherwise have got. In sharing the product with fans, the company shared the following insight:
"Crafted with exceptional realism, the mask features silicone skin, glass eyes, and individually hand-punched hair, delivering an unparalleled lifelike finish despite his wraithlike form. Every fold, texture and decaying detail has been meticulously sculpted to reflect his corrupted existence between worlds. The display support is designed as the Morgul blade planted into the castle ruins, recreating the dramatic moment of attack. A haunting centerpiece for collectors and fans of The Lord of the Rings."
Designed to be displayed, rather than worn, the Exclusive Edition comes with a mini replica of the Morgul Blade to rest the mask on, for wherever in your home you decide to keep it.
As you might expect, all of that attention to detail and the amount of time that goes into producing the mask doesn't come cheap, and it's currently retailing for $1299. That said, if you are a huge Lord of the Rings fan and a lover of collecting all things physical, then you would likely struggle to find anything with quite the same high quality execution as the mask above.
