It doesn't get talked about all that much, but when it comes to the best original movies put out by Netflix, many fall into the romantic comedy genre. A lot of Netflix's biggest original projects have huge budgets and they end up disappointing critics and the viewing audience, like Bright and Death Note both did in 2017. With romantic comedies, the budgets are far smaller and that allows the movies to be made without that kind of pressure.
The end result is that there is an impressive category of quality releases from Netflix in the rom-com genre, spanning all sorts of stories. Some are adapted from popular book series, some follow classic tropes of the genres, some go against those notable tropes, and some are themed around the holiday season. Netflix's batch of original romantic comedies also covers all sorts of relationships, whether it's a friends-to-lovers tale, an LGBTQ+ romance, a high school crush, or something else entirely.
Over the past decade or so, it's difficult to think of a genre that Netflix has had more success with. Many of these rom-coms have received high viewership numbers, including one of the platform's latest hits, while others received widespread critical acclaim. A few managed to do both, which helps make up the streaming service's greatest releases.
10 Voicemails For Isabelle (2026)
That new movie that has found its way to the top of Netflix's streaming charts is Voicemails for Isabelle, which features Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson in the lead roles. The film manages to give us a fun romantic comedy that has a lot of heart behind it.
Deutch stars as Jill, who copes with the loss of her sister Isabelle by leaving voicemails on Isabelle's phone number, only for that number to be reassigned to Wes (Robinson), who listens to the messages and falls for Jill. The film sits at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, showing that it's more than just a popular flick.
9 Holidate (2020)
So many rom-coms centered around Christmas come and go every year, so it's understandable when some of the best of them get overlooked. That seemed to be the case with Holidate, though it's actually a film that works on any holiday throughout the year, which should make it more popular.
Holidate follows two perpetually single people who make a deal to be each other's date to various holidays so they can avoid prying questions from their respective families. Along the way, they fall for each other and the chemistry between Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey makes this movie work.
8 People We Meet On Vacation (2026)
Another relatively new movie to rank among Netflix's best original rom-coms is People We Meet on Vacation, which is based on the 2021 novel of the same name. This is a classic case of the friends-to-lovers trope that many romantic comedies cover.
People We Meet on Vacation centers on two polar opposite best friends, Poppy and Alex, who agree to go on vacation together once a year. The story is told in a non-linear fashion as we see their issues in the present, how they became friends, and where they end up. It's a cute, well-received movie that's easy to watch.
7 Love At First Sight (2023)
Given the premise of this movie, it probably should've been called Love at First Flight. That's because Love at First Sight, based on the novel The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, tells the story of two people who meet at the airport before a flight to London.
Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy are great together as we watch their entire relationship develop. The dinner they share, the time on the plane, and how they hope to find each other while in London all make for an engaging movie with two leads who share electric chemistry.
6 The Incredible Jessica James (2017)
The Incredible Jessica James is a different kind of rom-com as it focuses more on the protagonist and her life than the main romance at the center. The story follows the titular Jessica James (Jessica Williams), a struggling playwright who is fresh off a bad breakup, as she connects with an app developer.
The romance in the story feels unlikely, yet it's charming. The real aspects that make The Incredible Jessica James so great are a strong screenplay and a tremendous lead performance by Williams. With a supporting cast that includes LaKeith Stanfield, Chris O'Dowd, and Noël Wells, the film is a winner.
5 Set It Up (2018)
When you discuss Netflix original romantic comedies, Set It Up is a film that always comes to mind. The movie uses a tried-and-true formula, which is why it works as it puts two people in an unlikely scenario and sees them fall in love with each other.
Set It Up stars Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch as overworked assistants who plot to get their bosses to date, making them happy and lessening their workloads. Along the way, they find romance in each other. Powell, Deutch, Lucy Liu, and Taye Diggs make up one of the best rom-com casts in recent memory.
4 Alex Strangelove (2020)
It's almost unfair to categorize Alex Strangelove as a romantic comedy because it does so many things. It falls into that category, yet it's also a coming-of-age story, a teen dramedy, and more. The story follows Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny) as he learns more about his own sexuality.
Alex is dating Claire, yet is concerned about losing his virginity, only for an openly gay boy named Elliot to show interest in him. This leads Alex to navigate his own feelings, relationships, and sexuality.
3 The Half Of It (2020)
Another rom-com that utilizes a familiar trope with success is The Half of It. Alice Wu's film is inspired by the 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac, yet it takes place in a modern setting, which ended up being a great decision.
The Half of It centers on Ellie Chu, a brilliant but shy student who agrees to help a jock named Paul by writing love letters to his crush, the most popular girl in school, Aster. Things get tricky when Ellie discovers that she has feelings for Aster. The film was met with high praise, including a 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
2 Always Be My Maybe (2019)
Always Be My Maybe takes the friends-to-lovers trope down a different route. In it, Ali Wong and Randall Park play Sasha Tran and Marcus Kim, two childhood best friends who eventually lose their virginities to each other and then drift apart.
16 years later, the two reconnect by chance and their old friendship, as well as other more complicated feelings, rise to the top. The film is well written, features two strong lead performances, and has a hilarious cameo from Keanu Reeves as an exaggerated version of himself. It's one of Netflix's comedies, romantic or not.
1 To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
Based on the popular novel by Jenny Han, To All the Boys I've Loved Before has a fantastic setup. It sees Lara Jean's love life spiral when secret letters that she wrote to boys she had crushes on get released to them, forcing her to confront those feelings.
One of the boys, Peter, agrees to a fake relationship with Lara Jean to make his ex jealous and so LJ's friend Josh (who is dating her sister) knows that she's over him. Peter and Lara Jean fall more for each other with each scene in this great rom-com that also has two sequels on Netflix, both of which are worth checking out.
