Released on February 27, this new free game on Steam puts you in control of John Appleby, a game historian. In the game, you’ll need to venture out to encounter and face Evil John, your shadow twin, who has been doing “some evil business and is causing genres to collide.” This can be seen applied to the gameplay, as John’s Quest isn’t part of a specific genre, but multiple ones at the same time.
For example, a large portion of what is highlighted is classic platforming sequences that look a lot like the classics, and even reinterpretations, such as the superb and award-winning Celeste. However, you’ll also be experiencing RPG-like gaming sequences that resemble classic 2D The Legend of Zelda games, which will have you facing enemies, gathering coins, and exploring the world around you.
On the Steam page, the developer explains that each level is different from the other because of Evil John’s machinations, so you may be exploring different genres apart from the aforementioned ones. Additionally, there are also extra features, like rhythm-based platforming sequences, laser guns, and multi-phase boss fights. John’s Quest is one of those delightfully weird games on Steam.
