A new entry in the Atomfall franchise has been announced for later this month, giving fans a chance to return to Wyndham and the mysterious Midsummer Island - the titular Wicked Isle of the game's 2025 story expansion.

Atomfall: The Wicked Isle Comic Is Coming from 2000 AD

As announced on social media, the next issue of Judge Dredd Megazine will include part one of a new Atomfall comic story, titled The Wicked Isle. The new story - from Jonathan L. Howard, Anthony Williams and Rob Steen - is based on the game's The Wicked Isle expansion, with a new story set on Midsummer Island.

2000 AD previously added to Atomfall lore with a four-part story beginning in Judge Dredd Megazine 478, acting as a prequel to the game's story.

Wicked Isle will have a similar role, with an earlier preview showing a British Atomic Research Division robot taking on a Feral. The comic will be available to buy in digital form from the official 2000 AD store.

What Will Atomfall's New 'Wicked Isle' Story Be About?

Fans don't yet know anything about this new Atomfall story, other than that it takes place on Midsummer Island - a location incredibly close to Windscale Atom Plant, and thus suffering the highest level of infection in its flora, fauna and residents.

The Wicked Isle game expansion introduced new enemies including the Wicker Man-inspired Abbey Druids, piratical Lake Bandits and mutated Aquatic Ferals - vicious aquatic monsters with a feel of Lovecraft's Innsmouth people.

While all of Atomfall's Wyndham is relatively abandoned, Midsummer Island is a particularly inhospitable place. As with the main game's focus on the real-life Windscale fire, Midsummer Island was inspired by real locations. Rebellion has previously stated that the location was inspired by Gruinard Island - an abandoned island used for wartime testing of weaponized anthrax - and Lindisfarne (aka Holy Island), which is known for its secluded chapel.

As a result, Midsummer Island is a desolate location haunted by an unhinged religious cult - all elements likely to take center stage in 2000 AD's new story.

What's Next for Atomfall?

While 2000 AD is celebrating the Wicked Isle expansion with a tie-in story, the next expansion is already on the horizon. Rebellion has announced that new expansion The Red Strain will launch September 16, 2025.

This new expansion adds new weapons, enemies and skills, and appears to be inspired by War of the Worlds, and the 'Red Weed' that the Martians use to paralyze Britain during their invasion. The Red Strain will take multiple forms, including fearsome plants, a swarm of insects and a 'Red Mist' which enrages the game's enemies, making them even more dangerous.

The new expansion will take place in a new region called Stafell Crag, which includes an abandoned train yard and the sprawling Test Site Moriah, with Rebellion promising a mystery that will have "longlasting, unseen ramifications not just for Stafell Crag, but for the quarantine zone as a whole."

With 2000 AD having published an Atomfall prequel and now a tie-in to The Wicked Isle, it's likely that a Red Strain comic will also appear in Judge Dredd Megazine some time in 2027.

Judge Dredd Megazine 491 is coming April 15 from 2000 AD.
