Fans have been not-so-patiently awaiting the final installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, since 2023.

Columbia and Sony Pictures introduced audiences to Miles Morales and the spider-multi-verse in 2018. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, based on the Marvel comic, received immediate praise for its innovative storytelling and stunning amalgamation of animation styles. The film won Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards and secured a trilogy.

The Spider-Verse expanded with the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023. The highly anticipated sequel dominated the box office, making $120.6 million during its U.S. opening. Across the Spider-Verse introduced a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse. The sequel ended with an unexpected cliffhanger that questioned the fate of the Multiverse.

Audiences reluctantly accepted that they would have to wait an entire year before seeing how, or if, the Spider-People saved the Multiverse. However, no one predicted the prolonged wait that lay ahead.

Originally slated for 2024, Sony pushed the release of Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse back several years amid Hollywood union strikes and various production issues. The fate of the Multiverse will finally be revealed next summer.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse is scheduled to premiere on June 20, 2027. Ahead of its release, the studio has shared a look at the animation from the film. These stunning previews clarify why the Beyond The Spider-Verse production was an arduous, time-consuming process.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse's Release Date Was Delayed Over 3 Years

Sony pushed the Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse release date from March 2024 to July 2027. As writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller told io9, the second Spider-Verse film was originally one film. Alas, the scale of the movie grew to such an extent that it had to be split across two installments.

Beyond The Spider-Verse was planned to quickly follow its predecessor's epic yet unsatisfying ending, to officially conclude the story. However, it was removed from the 2024 theatrical calendar amid the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Actors, writers, and other SAG-AFTRA union members ceased work in July 2023 to fight for better pay and job protection against artificial intelligence. The strike lasted 118 days and caused delays across the entertainment industry.

While the strike lasted five months, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse was delayed almost four years due to production issues. The Beyond The Spider-Verse delay largely came from complications with splitting the once singular story across two films.

Writers, Lord and Miller realized that after cutting the epic second film, there was not enough story left for another full cinematic arc. The ending was always clear, but Beyond The Spider-Verse did not have a fleshed-out middle.

Lord and Miller have since developed a strong plot about balancing one's family and calling, but it has taken time to reconstruct the story. "Having to take it apart to put it back together again was really, really [the] real thing that made it take longer," Chris Miller told i09.

Lord and Miller also briefly pulled their full attention from Spider-Man to craft the film adaptation of Project Hail Mary. Overall, the Spider-Verse creators are taking their time to ensure that the final film surpasses the extremely high bar set by the first two.

Beyond The Spider-Verse's New Images Reveal Detailed Artistry

Sony recently released several frames from Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and the intricate animation helps contextualize the wait.

Famously, each Multiverse and its associated characters are animated in distinct styles in the Spider-Verse films. Gwen Stacy exists in a world of watercolor, Hobie Brown rocks among the pages of a hand-drawn punk Zine, and Miles swings through detailed 3-D animation.

As seen in the Beyond the Spider-Verse preview images, each animated world is depicted in uniquely vivid detail. It is apparent that the filmmakers did not rush animation to speed up the movie's release. The animation for each universe depicted in the Beyond the Spirder-Verse previews truly embodies full, lived worlds— as opposed to side-quests tacked onto the main story.

This intricate work further clarifies the upcoming film’s production delays. The filmmakers have worked to elevate the already groundbreaking animation of previous Spider-Verse films to new heights.

There’s no one that puts more pressure on us than ourselves,” Miller told i09, “Wanting to outdo ourselves each time and see things that you haven’t seen before and make it feel like something you’ve never experienced before. And so, trying to get something that is as worthy as the previous two has been the driver.

This drive is apparent in the film’s previewed animation, which proves that the film’s creators will not sacrifice craft for haste.

While fans may not be happy about the nearly four-year wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse — perhaps the spectacle of the film will justify its lengthy delay.
