One of Netflix's best crime shows has another case to solve on the streamer.
Netflix's library of TV shows includes quite a few exciting crime thrillers. It is easy to see why, as the genre is perfect for Netflix's popular binge release model. With many twists, intriguing central mysteries, complex characters, and a moody atmosphere, Netflix's best crime thriller series pull in viewers and make them want to watch full seasons in one sitting. Recently, Jon Bernthal's His & Hers, which debuted in January 2026, entered the hall of Netflix's most-watched TV shows of all time. Now, it is the time for one of the streamer's highest-rated series to return.

5 Years Later, Netflix's Best Crime Thriller Series With 100% RT Score Keeps Getting Better Ahead Of 2026 Return
The best Netflix crime thriller series is officially coming back next month, and it just keeps getting better ahead of its 2026 return.
The Chestnut Man will officially return with a new season on Netflix on May 7. Season 2 has been titled The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek, following a brand-new mystery. All six episodes of the Netflix crime thriller series will be released on the same day. The Chestnut Man season 2's debut finally ends a long 5-year hiatus, as the first season of the Nordic police procedural dropped on the streaming service on September 29, 2021.
The Chestnut Man season 1 introduced viewers to the investigators Naia Thulin and Mark Hess, who did not see eye to eye at first but grew to become a tight-knit team as they unraveled the mystery behind a serial killer leaving behind little chestnut men near his victims' bodies. That storyline was wrapped up in the first season, which stands at a mighty perfect 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Danish series also boasts a stellar audience score at 84%.
Five years later, The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek will continue the story of Thulin and Hess, based on the sequel book by Søren Sveistrup. The Netflix crime thriller series' long hiatus between seasons was likely tied to the wait for new source material to rise, as the follow-up novel was only released recently, on March 26, 2026. This time around, Thulin and Hess reunite to investigate the murder of a 41-year-old woman who had been stalked for a long time, with an eerie nursery rhyme song replacing season 1's chestnut men.
Thulin and Hess are also said to have a complicated relationship when they come back together, which The Chestnut Man season 2 should explain by filling in the gaps of what happened off-screen in the years between both seasons. The official synopsis for the new season released by Netflix also teases how the stalked woman that Thulin and Hess look into connects to another case, putting the unsolved murder of a teenager that happened a couple of years ago under a new light.
The Chestnut Man season 1's overwhelmingly positive reception puts it among the best crime thriller series on Netflix. It is part of a select group that includes hit shows like His & Hers, Adolescence, Ozark, Monster, and more. The Chestnut Man season 2 is hoping to continue the momentum that Nordic crime thrillers have created on Netflix with the release of the global smash hit Norwegian series Detective Hole.
