A few years after The Tinder Swindler became a massive success for Netflix, one that inspired a spin-off series, the streamer has been marketing a new show as a "darker" follow-up to that true-crime documentary. The new series follows a case that unfolded in Spain across decades, beginning when landline telephones were the norm and concluding in the era of social media. The two-part documentary series debuted on Netflix a few days ago, and immediately emerged as a hit for the streamer. It was joined by fellow true-crime series A Friend, A Murderer, which is set in Denmark. According to FlixPatrol, both shows are currently among the most-watched titles on the global and domestic Netflix charts.

The Spanish series revolves around the disappearance of a 42-year-old woman some years ago, and the ensuing search orchestrated by her mother. The mother discovers that her missing daughter was traveling across Spain with an elderly man with a large presence on TikTok; the man got in touch with the mother and expressed sadness at the woman's disappearance. He vowed to retrace their steps and look for clues that might point the investigation in the right direction. At the same time, the missing woman's mother began to receive suspicious text messages from her daughter's phone, claiming that she wants to leave Spain and start afresh in Argentina. The mother began to suspect the worst, and started communicating with the last person to see her daughter alive: the elderly TikToker, whose name is José Jurado Montilla.

Here's the New Netflix True-Crime Documentary Taking the Streaming Charts by Storm

To the mother's shock, she discovers that the TikToker has a dark past that involves a trail of dead bodies and a lengthy prison sentence. The show is called The TikTok Killer, and follows the typical Netflix true-crime format. It relies on talking heads and dramatic recreations — these are tropes that the acclaimed documentary The Zodiac Killer Project dissects with wry humor that will interest fans of the genre. The TikTok Killer also makes liberal use of Montilla's social media videos. In many of them, he antagonized his detractors by claiming that he had a relationship with the missing woman. Her family refuses to believe him. You can watch the bingeable series on Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
