The Howling is getting a fresh perspective.

The Howling is a werewolf film directed by Joe Dante (known for Gremlins) and is known for being revolutionary in the world of special effects alongside Rob Bottin, with groundbreaking transformations captured on-screen. Based on a 1977 novel, the film follows a traumatized news anchor (played by Dee Wallace) who comes across a werewolf colony. Despite only grossing $17.9 million, it has since become a cult classic. The original cast included Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, Christopher Stone, Belinda Balaski, and Kevin McCarthy.

StudioCanal's EVP of Global Marketing and Distribution, Hugh Spearing, appeared at CinemaCon to reveal that the 1981 horror classic, The Howling, is currently in development. The adaptation of both the novel and movie is welcome news, as StudioCanal's new genre label Sixth Dimension, primarily focusing on horror, thrillers, and sci-fi movies, will be at the helm.

There have been many attempts to remake the classic horror, with the most recent being released in 2011, titled The Howling: Reborn, and rumors of a Netflix adaptation with It director Andy Muschietti attached to direct. The Howling: Reborn was rated an abysmal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics stated that it "tries to distance itself from Twilight," and "it has nothing to do with Howling." The cast included Landon Liboiron, Lindsey Shaw, Ivana Milicevic, Jess Rath, and Niels Schneider.

It was reported in 2020 that Netflix was adapting The Howling with Muschietti behind the wheel, after stating in previous interviews that the 80s horror would be at the top of his list to remake. It would be based on the original novel written by Gary Brandner. Muschietti is known for his success with the horror genre, as the 2017 remake of Stephen King's novel It, grossed over $700 million at the box office. However, no updates have been revealed as to whether it's still moving forward.
