NBC News already provides security services for its talent, including the hosts of the “Today” show. But the outlet in the past few days has ramped up security precautions for “Today” because of the unexplained disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie.
Private security services and the NYPD police presence for “Today” have been increased, including in the vicinity of the morning show’s street-level studio across the street from 30 Rockefeller in Manhattan, according to reports. Officials conducting the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance have given no indication that Savannah Guthrie or anyone else at the “Today” show is being targeted.
NBC implemented the additional security measures “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a CNN report published Friday. The moves “may help alleviate some of the stress the show’s hosts feel as they talk on-air every morning about the unsolved mystery,” according to the report.
A spokesman for NBC News declined to comment.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Jan. 31 when she was last seen at her Arizona residence. Local police and the FBI have been treating her disappearance as a possible kidnapping, and have offered a $50,000 reward for any significant leads in the case.
On Wednesday, Savannah Guthrie posted a video on Instagram in which she and her siblings pleaded with their mother’s kidnapper. “We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated,” she said. “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen.”
Savannah Guthrie was scheduled to be co-hosting NBC’s coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies in Milan but stayed in the U.S. amid the ongoing investigation into her mother’s disappearance. NBC commentators Mary Carillo and Terry Gannon opened the network’s Olympics coverage Friday in sending well wishes to Guthrie.
Earlier Friday, former “Today” host Hoda Kotb returned to the morning program to show support for Savannah Guthrie and her family. Kotb left the show a year ago; she had been Guthrie’s “Today” co-anchor from 2018 until her exit in January 2025. “I just want to say this whole thing is breaking my heart and I’m happy to be sitting here with you,” Kotb said. To which Sheinelle Jones responded, “Because you’re family!”
