Fresh of the back of taking Sundance by storm with “The Moment,” Charlie xcx appears to be gearing up with another hot film project.
Variety has learned that her upcoming movie with Japanese horror maestro Takashi Miike — which Variety announced last year and in which she’ll star and produce — is taking shape, with additional cast and a plot unveiled, plus a sales company coming on board.
Milly Alcock, the “House of the Dragon” breakout soon to be seen in “Supergirl,” will join Charli on screen, as will Sho Kasamatsu (“Tokyo Vice”) and Kiko Mizuhara (“Ride or Die”). Norman Reedus has also joined the cast.
As for the plot, the film — written by Ross Evans and currently known as “Untitled Kyoto Project” — follows three friends who meet up in the Japanese city of Kyoto only to see their holiday turn into a nightmare as Charli’s character is possessed by a tortured spirit. Given the involvement of Miike, known for “Audition” and “Ichi the Killer,” expect violence.
The film, being produced by Charli’s company Studio365, is now heading to the European Film Market in Berlin, with The Veterans and CAA Media Finance handling sales. Given the calibre of of the project — not to mention Charli’s swiftly proven success crossing over into film with “The Moment” — it’s likely to be a very hot package.
Directed by Aidan Zamiri, mockumentary “The Moment” — in which Charli played an alternate-reality version of herself — became one of the buzziest movies in Sundance, buzz that quickly translated into packed out cinemas. A24 announced at the end of January that the film had become its fastest-selling limited release to date, with more than 50 screenings selling out across key markets.
The new project with Miike underlines Charli’s fast-tracked transition from music icon to movie star. Following her debut performances in last year’s “Erupcja,” swiftly followed by “100 Nights of Hero,” she has since appeared in the horror “Sacrifice,” and at Sundance, alongside “The Moment” starred in Gregg Akari’s “I Want Your Sex” alongside Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman.
