Marvel TV shows have become much more popular after the conclusion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Phase 3" — but there should still be space for the MCU's first and longest TV endeavor, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. With a seven-season run beginning in 2013 that greatly outpaced its then-limited Marvel TV counterparts, the show certainly achieved something noteworthy.

While many Marvel series have managed to score big budgets and famous stars by positing themselves as limited series (WandaVision, Agatha All Along, MoonKnight), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was a truly classic show that felt built to last. With memorable characters and an engaging balance of superheroes, science, and emotion, the work of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. shouldn't end with Phase 3.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pulled back the curtain on the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division, the organization that worked largely behind the scenes in the Avengers movies. The show was led by Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), the pleasant and polite fan-favorite movie character. Coulson led a team of primarily non-powered agents — a corner of the Marvel world that had gone largely unexplored.

Yet Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also introduced a new, unique superhero whose personality and origin story were developed over the course of many more hours than any Avenger. Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), also known as Quake, joined Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. before she had any inklings of her abilities. Over time, she became like a daughter to Coulson, and a powerful, nuanced hero in her own right with a rich backstory.

Daisy's energy was balanced out by FitzSimmons, the young, innocent, inseparable scientist duo. At the start, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) had a bit of a Mulder and Scully dynamic to them — intimate trust, friendship, and professional efficiency. Yet S.H.I.E.L.D. succeeded where many stories fail. Romance blossomed between FitzSimmons that felt authentic and natural, deepening their relationship rather than ruining it.

Coulson was the only character among the show's main cast who had previously appeared in the MCU, but the show stands tall on its own two legs as it introduces many comic book characters and stories into Marvel's on-screen presence. Alongside Quake, S.H.I.E.L.D. also broached a compelling iteration of Ghost Rider, played by Gabriel Luna.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Was An Underdog In The MCU

As the first of its kind, there was confusion and speculation as to whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was truly considered part of the MCU's canon. This wasn't helped by the fact that we all saw Coulson die on screen in The Avengers the year before S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered, which cast a delegitimizing, "just for fun" energy over the show's main premise.

Nonetheless, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actually went out of its way to explore not only a legitimate but narratively rich explanation for Coulson's new lease on life. For much of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s run, the details of Coulson's recovery were a mystery even to him, and the ominous project T.A.H.I.T.I. that resurrected him carried several seasons of the show's story.

To further legitimize S.H.I.E.L.D.'s place within the MCU, the show featured guest appearances from Marvel movie characters like Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, Iron Man 3's President Ellis (William Sadler), the Thor saga's Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), and more. All the while, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued to develop its own additions to the MCU — characters who are worthy of leading a Marvel film of their own and yet never have.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Is Still Marvel's Longest-Running Series

In fact, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the only MCU television series to date to run for more than three seasons. Despite its general lack of clout and perception as jeopardizing the franchise's continuity, S.H.I.E.L.D. was actually an effective undercurrent to Phase 3. The show moved with the flow of the movies, incorporating the fallout from events of the Avengers saga into the show.

While Agent Carter, which was treated as something of a sister show to S.H.I.E.L.D., was canceled after only two seasons, S.H.I.E.L.D. ran for seven and wrapped up in a way that made the show feel like a complete story. After introducing strong new superheroes to the on-screen franchise and elevating Phil Coulson to a leading man in his own right, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. holds a significant place in the MCU.
