It's been almost 30 years since Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, and rumors of a sequel have swirled for several years now. Star Lisa Kudrow is on board, and she has good news for fans eagerly awaiting the film. Collider's Steve Weintraub spoke with Kudrow at South by Southwest, where the new season of her revived HBO comedy, The Comeback, is set to debut.

While the sequel has yet to get the official greenlight, Kudrow says there's reason for optimism: "I don't know for sure, but it's looking good. I can say it's looking good right now."

To clarify, she noted that "it feels like [the studio] wants to do it, and then they have to decide if it makes sense for them." She also lavished praise on the sequel's script, which, like the original, was penned by Robin Schiff, who created the Romy and Michele characters in her play Ladies Room:

"I've read a script. I laughed out loud like five or six times, which is huge. Or more than that even. That's a big deal."

Professional party girls and underachievers Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow) inadvertently learn about their ten-year high school reunion from former classmate Heather (Janeane Garofalo). Determined to stick it to the mean girls who bullied them, they reinvent themselves as successful businesswomen who invented the Post-It Note; hilarity, outrageous outfits, and elaborate dance numbers ensue. Directed by David Mirkin (The Simpsons), the film also starred Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, and Justin Theroux.

Because today is Friday the 13th, let's march our way through the iconic slasher franchise. Ch-ch-ch-ch. Ha-ha-ha-ha.

What Is 'The Comeback'?

The first season of the series, which debuted in 2005, stars Kudrow as Valerie Cherish, a once-popular actor who starred on the sitcom I'm It!. She's set to return to TV on the sitcom Room and Bored after a decade of failure, so she also becomes the star of The Comeback, a reality show documenting her return to the spotlight. The show was cancelled after a single season, but became a cult hit and was eventually revived in 2014 for a second season. It chronicled the further misadventures of Cherish, who learns that Paulie G (Lance Barber), the creator of Room and Bored, has a new HBO series, Seeing Red, based on a fictionalized version of his life with her as the show's villain. She ends up cast as herself, the role she was born to play. It was cancelled again, but will return to HBO later this month for a third and allegedly final season. This time, Cherish is starring on a new series written by artificial intelligence.

A sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is in development. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
