As a Jersey Shore local, Michael's hero is Bruce Springsteen — and you can't convince him that Born To Run is a better album than Darkness on the Edge of Town.
Season 3 of Invincibleended with anger, guilt, and excitement for what comes next. Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun) defeated Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and pledged that he will kill anyone who attempts to harm those he loves, contradicting his long-time philosophy of no killing. Eve (Gillian Jacobs) overcame her mental blocks, just for a moment, to burn Conquest, allowing Mark to finish him off.

“It's the source of conflict, internal turmoil.”

COLLIDER: I'm so excited for people to see Season 4, especially the way Season 3 ended. Steven, I want to start with you. We see at the end of Season 3 that Mark is filled with rage and says he'll kill anyone who threatens his family. Where is his headspace going into Season 4?
STEVEN YEUN: I think he's at this stage of, you know, disillusionment. I think he's gotten to see a lot of the truth of the world in some way, especially from his vantage point. And I think he's making sense of it. I think he's making sense of his primal urges, but then also trying to understand how and why and what's going on. So he's just a man caught in tension. I think always.
Gillian, it appears that Eve can overcome her mental blocks. Even if it was just for a moment. How much more of her potential will we see in Season 4?
GILLIAN JACOBS: Oh my goodness. Well, Season 4 is really interesting because she's going to be faced with having her powers not function in the way that she's used to. And so it's sort of the inverse of what we saw at the end of Season 3. It's an interesting journey that she's on in Season 4. And I think for someone who maybe took her powers for granted, this is going to be like a real, what is a phrase that I can use that I've never used before? I'm like, I don't want to give you the same phrasing that I give everybody else, but I'm like, trying to think of a different way to say it's the source of conflict, internal turmoil.
I love that. That’s perfect.
JACOBS: Sorry, I couldn’t come up with anything wholly original.

Sometimes the easiest phrase is the best way. Even if you say it over and over again. The Mark and Eve dynamic is something that everybody loves. What is it about them and their characteristics that balance each other out so well?
YEUN: I think both characters have their own things going on. I think they're kind of unique in their own reality and I think the two of them come together when they come together and they have their own storylines when they do. And I think no one's kind of molded in this tangential way to another character. And so then, you know, it's really fun when the characters do come together and you're like, oh, there's something serious to talk about. Eve is so badass and that's what's so fun about those fight scenes too. It’s that you're rooting for both of them. It's not a support thing.
JACOBS: Yeah, I think for her, it's probably the first supportive relationship. I mean, it has its challenges. But if you look at her previous relationship history, I think that this is, you know, the best relationship that she's been in. And I feel like, yeah, they challenge each other. They support one another. If you can have a business with your romantic partner, that really says a lot about the strength of the relationship.
YEUN: Totally.
'Invincible's Steven Yeun and Gillian Jacobs Look Back on Their Key Scenes Together
“The magic of the show is that I watch it and it really does feel like we're acting together.”

I want to finish up by asking, if you could pick a previous scene from past seasons for you two to be in the recording booth together, to play off of, what scene would that be?
YEUN: Oh man, what a question. I don't even remember all of the past scenes.
JACOBS: I mean, I guess, you know, like when they finally admit that they have feelings for each other, or like those early days of the romance.
YEUN: I agree.
JACOBS: The magic of the show is that I watch it, and it really does feel like we're acting together, but I think that would have been lovely to get to record at the same time.
YEUN: Yeah, it's always nice when I get the privilege of having Gil having recorded first, because then I get to, like, play it back and then react. But yeah, if we were in the room together… We say this all the time. We need to do this.
Gillian, is that a disadvantage that you have to record first, and then Steven gets to play off of you?
YEUN: I mean, I'm just stepping on Gil's shoulders really, all the time.
JACOBS: I mean, it is the really funny thing about doing voiceover work, you know, is like, sometimes you can be in total isolation. And then I've had other experiences where the show did, like, group records, and that's really fun too. But, you know, Meredith, who voices directs the show, does such a great job of letting me know my sandbox for the scene and guiding me there. And she's a great scene partner. So I'm very lucky that I get to play with her. And the writers are very involved, too, on Zoom when we're recording, too. So I feel like they all, they all keep me in the right worlds. And they give us the freedom to try different things. But there's something about the environment that the show creates that it feels kind of easy to do really emotional things, that when I read it on the page, I'm like, oh God, that's a big scene I have to do today. And then when I get to it, for whatever reason, it always just feels like it flows naturally. So whatever they're doing is working.
