Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.
Dungeons & Dragons is always coming out with new material, but that doesn't mean fans are always excited about it. Virtually every update to the game is subject to intense scrutiny, with critics expressing concerns over game balance, flavor, and the direction of the franchise as a whole. With the introduction of 5.5e and other major changes in recent years, the community is as split as ever.
The latest addition, however, seems to be dodging most of that criticism. A new Unearthed Arcana playtest debuted a set of villainous subclasses and character options, with a Pestilence Domain cleric, Circle of the Titan druid, Hell Knight fighter, and Demonic Sorcery sorcerer. For once, fans are mostly thrilled about everything on display.
D&D Fans Are Enjoying The Villainous Options
Reddit user Deathpacito-01 made a post praising the Villainous Options Unearthed Arcana, saying they hope whoever was behind it gets "a big bonus and a lot of job security." Deathpacito claims that it's "the most positive reception [they]'ve seen for a UA in like, ever," and plenty of the comments support this conclusion.
A lot of the praise comes from the creative experimentation in the new Unearthed Arcana, which fans find refreshing after most of D&D's 5e era stuck to fairly safe iteration. Stoutsmasher shares their appreciation that D&D is "at least trying new things," and adamg0013 praises the work of the "new guard" at Wizards of the Coast so far.
The Villainous Options Unearthed Arcana isn't 100% perfect, of course, as playtest materials are meant to be rough drafts rather than the final iterations of ideas. Madopoi sums up the situation by saying that "UA literally isn't supposed to balanced yet" and suggesting that, in all other regards, the new material is "very, very good."
It's Nice To See Some Experiments
This isn't the only Unearthed Arcana to think outside the box recently, as other tests of horror-themed and post-apocalyptic D&D subclasses also made some interesting moves. I tend to favor interesting ideas and trade-offs over careful balance, so it's been exciting to see D&D get a little more experimental following the release of 5.5e.
Reddit user KingNTheMaking suggests that fans should be careful about how they word feedback for the new material, as they "very much want all of these things to exist." For anyone jazzed about the new subclasses but concerned about the details, noting their appreciation of the ideas in feedback alongside any criticism might be wiser than simply dropping complaints. Hopefully, Dungeons & Dragons will be able to refine these ideas into compelling official character options in the future.
