There is still time to binge-watch Prime Video's six-episode spy thriller in time for the season 2 premiere on May 6, 2026. We have received a wealth of new seasons for beloved television shows this spring, with Euphoria season 3, Invincible season 4, The Boys season 5, The Pitt season 2, and much more.

The hits seem to keep coming, with shows like Citadel set to return in May for season 2. The Prime Video spy series debuted in April 2023, and the story of the show up until its release was its massive production budget, a staggering $300 million, a likely consequence of MCU golden children, the Russo brothers, serving as executive producers.

The spy action thriller stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra as Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, secret agents for Citadel, an independent spy organization dedicated to maintaining world security. At the beginning of the series, Mason and Nadia are attacked by a rival agency, and their memories are wiped.

Citadel begins eight years after that event, and Mason and Nadia are living normal lives, completely unaware of who they were as agents of Citadel. When that same rival agency returns, Mason and Nadia are pressed back into service and try to regain the memories and lives they once had.

Though Citadel was mostly panned by critics, earning a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, it was renewed for a second season that very same year. However, very little was discussed about the upcoming season until April 2026, when a release date, poster, and trailer were simultaneously released.

Citadel season 2 is seven episodes long and will debut on May 6, 2026. This season will find Mason and Nadia recruiting new operatives for a global mission to save humanity. If that all sounds interesting, it's a good time to go back and binge-watch Citadel season 1.

Citadel Season 2 Is Make-Or-Break After Multiple Spinoff Cancellations

There is a lot riding on Citadel season 2. While we don't know how much this new season cost, it likely wasn't cheap, and even if it was, that $300 million price tag for the first season still hangs over the series. Another 51% on Rotten Tomatoes would not be good for the show or Amazon's hope to return on its investment.

Prime Video has already tried a few times to get a Citadel universe off the ground, and it's failed each time. The series is almost built to be franchised; there are supposedly Citadel sites all over the world. A savvy, international company like Amazon probably saw Citadel as a way to access viewers in other countries.

An Italian version, Citadel: Diana, was canceled after one season. Citadel: Honey Bunny, the India-set series, was also canceled after one season. Amazon intended to have other spinoffs, including ones set in Spain and Mexico, but none have materialized.

Citadel was supposed to be the setup for this massive spy TV franchise, and now, season 2 is seemingly its last hope. Prime Video is not at the Netflix level of ditching original programming, but it's not afraid to axe series that aren't working, which makes its commitment to Citadel curious.

It's possible that the $300 million cost of season 1 means that Amazon has already bought into the show continuing, for better or worse. They might have no other choice except to keep it going and pray that, this time, Citadel manages to stick with viewers and critics.
