An acclaimed Apple TV detective thriller delivered one of the wildest genre shifts in the history of television in its opening season. After its risky twist, it became hard not to wonder whether the show would be able to capture viewers' interest in season 2 as well. Surprisingly, the show in question has managed to level up in its new installment despite its storytelling risks.
Apple TV's Sugar initially came off as a typical neo-noir mystery thriller with borrowed shades from many genre classics. Its primary appeal in its earlier arcs came from Colin Farrell's performance as its titular lead and its visual flair. Even its overarching mysteries seemed compelling enough to keep one invested. However, these early chapters, too, had traces of weirdness to them.
The series kept hinting that something about Colin Farrell's character was not normal. After giving away many subtle clues, the original Apple TV show dropped a massive twist that turned it into a strange mix of sci-fi and psychological drama. It recontextualized its entire story and how viewers perceived its protagonist.
While the twist made the series more intriguing and instilled shock value, it raised many questions about where things would go from there. Surprisingly, even after its genre-bending twist, it seems like Apple TV's Sugar has outdone itself in season 2.
Sugar Season 2’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Far Better Than Season 1’s
Sugar season 1, by no means, was a critical failure. It earned a critics' score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score reached 80%. However, in season 1, its sci-fi twist almost seemed like the peak of its storytelling. The radical shift in its genre could have also potentially alienated viewers who merely wanted to see Colin Farrell lead a regular detective thriller.
Despite these risks and narrative challenges, Sugar season 2 seems to be doing incredibly well. It premiered on Apple TV on June 19, 2026, and it already boasts a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 96% with over 20 ratings from critics. Even its audience score has gone up to 94%, revealing a significant rise in its acclaim.
While it is possible that its critical scores might slightly dwindle over time, it seems unlikely they will fall below 90%. This suggests that as risky as might have seemed, Sugar season 2 has managed to justify season 1's weird genre shift. If all goes well for the Apple TV show, it might even get the chance to return for more reasons and continue its strange but compelling mishmash of genres.
