Robert Wood is a writer and editor based out of Cheshire, England. He is the author of 'The False Elephant: and 99 Other Unreasonably Short Stories' - 100 stories, each told in exactly 100 words.

Rob got into comics via Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man and the UK anthology 'The Mighty World of Marvel,' which was running Frank Miller's Daredevil, Classic Hulk and Contest of Champions II.

Prior to journalism, he worked in copywriting and copyedited for Oxford University Press. He is on X as @PinchTwigs and Instagram as roobwoodjourno.

Just a few days before the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel has explicitly confirmed three changes to Peter Parker's powers that will be on show in the new movie.

Despite being incredibly close to release, Brand New Day has maintained several of its biggest mysteries. Fans don't know who the body-hopping main villain will be or even who Sadie Sink is playing. There's also the mystery of how and why Spider-Man's radioactive blood has mutated.

Early trailers hinted this mutation comes with new powers, however a recent trailer is far, far more explicit about the new abilities Tom Holland's hero will have.

New Trailer Confirms Spider-Man Power Changes

MCU Spider-Man Shooting Organic Webs in Brand New Day

In a Facebook reels trailer posted by Marvel's official 'Spider-Man' account (below), Spider-Man performs a body scan, likely after asking for Bruce Banner's help with his mysterious mutation. After Spidey is scanned, a robotic voice reads out how Peter's body has changed, specifically listing three main changes:

  1. Organic webs
  2. Heightened senses
  3. Increased agility

While prior trailers had essentially established the former, the latter two details are new, and combine to explain scenes elsewhere of Peter fighting instinctively with all-black eyes, seemingly sensing the moves of his opponents.and reacting instantly, if not outright precognitively.

There's an outside chance that the trailer has been edit misleadingly, and that the scanner is noting Peter's existing powers alongside what's new, however given what we know about Peter's instinctual fighting, it's more likely that the trailer is actually breaking down the ingredients of this wild new ability.

This Is More Evidence That the MCU Will Adapt Spider-Man's Newest Comic Power

Spider-Man All-Black Eyes in Brand New Day Trailer

Prior trailers show Tom Holland's hero fighting against Scorpion and the Hand, his friendly demeanor giving way to a chillingly absent persona, with all-black eyes. In this form, Peter is seemingly far less humane, throwing the Scorpion into traffic in a way that risks the lives of others.

The transformation is one of the movie's big mysteries, however clues were given in the recent Amazing Spider-Man #30, from Joe Kelly, Pete Woods and Joe Caramagna. While not set in MCU canon the comic introduced a new power achieved by Peter unlocking a new extent of his Spider-Sense, where he can fight on a purely instinctual level, dodging and striking as if he can see the future, and fighting surprisingly brutally.

It makes sense that Marvel has introduced this new power both as synergy with the movie and to establish it as pre-existing comic lore ahead of the film. If so, then this is likely how Peter's new powers will work - as the trailer says, a unique combination of enhanced senses and increased agility.

The new 'instinctive fighting' ability isn't actually a new power, but a new application of Spider-Sense, with Spidey studying under Daredevil to get the most out of his powers. However, because his moves aren't conscious, the mercy and caution that usually define Spider-Man are absent, turning him into a more dangerous predator.

Brand New Day Is Reinventing Spider-Man

Only the film will confirm how closely Peter's mutation maps to his comic upgrade, but this new trailer spelling out the changes to Spider-Man's biology support the idea that they'll be very close, especially because Marvel has committed to synergy far harder for this movie than in the past.

With some combination of Spider-Man, Hulk and Punisher starring in comic series Spider-Man: Long Way Home, Punisher vs. Spider-Man, Spider-Man/Hulk: Fire & Brimstone and Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day (as well as confirmed villains Boomerang and Tarantula getting increased focus elsewhere), it's clear that Marvel wants MCU fans looking at comic stands and seeing a Spider-Man they recognize.

Faster, sadder and potentially deadlier, Tom Holland's Spider-Man is about to make his long-awaited return, with new powers that are sure to thrill fans whatever they turn out to be.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is coming 31 July.
