Zendaya Reveals Her Relationship Red Flags One Year After Tom Holland Engagement
Zendaya didn’t have to look too far to know Tom Holland was right for her.
A year after the Spider-Man costars confirmed their engagement, the Euphoria actress shared what she considers a relationship red flag—detailing a particularly an easy litmus test for those in her industry.
“One that works for us at work is how people treat their crews,” Zendaya reasoned in an Interview magazine conversation with her The Drama costar Robert Pattinson. “I admire people who are kind to everyone, not just the actors, directors, or producers. A very telling thing is how a crew feels about a particular actor, because they get to see how people are when the cameras are not rolling.”
Of course, Zendaya also has a heart for her pup, agreeing with Robert—who shares a baby girl with fiancée Suki Waterhouse—that how a partner treats animals is also a telling sign.
“I would get into a fight over my dog, for sure,” she continued. “Dogs are a good judge of character.”
Things are not necessarily so hard and fast when it comes to forming relationships, though.
“People are layered and complex and they make mistakes,” Zendaya added. “There are cultural differences. But there are also things that are just kind of, ‘Well, that’s rude. That’s mean.’ And there’s also the opposite.”
As she put it, “You can know someone for a long time and they can change, or you get to know them on a deeper level and you’re like, ‘Whoa. I didn’t see that side of you.’”

When it comes to her relationship with Tom—which was made public in 2021—specifically, Zendaya has shared a bit about what drew her to him in the first place.
“I think someone who has beautiful charisma—not on the Dune cast—but works for me is Mr. Tom Holland,” she explained in an interview with BuzzFeed in 2024. “I’m more shy and kind of quiet, so it takes a little bit more to pull me out of my shell. But he’s great at just talking to people and getting to know people. Like, you see him on talk shows and stuff like that; he’s just naturally very good at that.”
