Given how popular it seems to be with fans these days, it's easy to forget just how divisive The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was when it first launched for the GameCube back in 2003. The Toon style that has become so appreciated since, just wasn't what Zelda fans wanted at the time, with most asking for the gritty realism that was eventually delivered with Twilight Princess.

These days, it's seen as one of the real high points in the series, and it regularly crops up in conversations about which games deserve a similar treatment to what Ocarina of Time is about to get. Now, Nintendo themselves have weighed in on the game moving forward, and there's plenty of reason to be hopeful if you're a big Wind Waker fan.

Over on Reddit, one user shared a post from The Gamer, detailing a recent Nintendo event in which the company confirmed that they were adding GameCube games to the Nintendo Switch Online library. This caused some immediate pushback from fans in the case of The Wind Waker specifically, with many much more keen to see the HD Wii U remaster added instead.

Happily, the GameCube version being added to NSO doesn't mean that The Wind Waker HD won't also be added at a later date, with a Nintendo representative confirming that "All options are on the table moving forward. Under the original posts, many fans weighed in with their own thoughts on the matter, and it's safe to say they're desperate for the HD game to leave the confines of the Wii U.

"Yeah... I'm not very excited to play Wind Waker without the Swift Sail and having to pay hundreds of Rupees and backtracking to Tingle so many times to find the Triforce shards," one comment read.

"Just played Wind Walker HD last year after not being in June’s Direct. Won’t ever get rid of my Wii U until I can play WW HD, TP HD, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch 2," another added.

While a third said, "I can actually see this happening, especially with the way the economy is going. Not everyone is going to be able to buy a Switch 2 and this feels like a fairly easy thing to port in a year or two."

It certainly does seem to be an era where older games are making a return in one form or another, and the upcoming release of the full Ocarina of Time remake is only going to increase the appetite for the series further. Whether that means we'll get Wind Waker HD remains to be seen, but we live in hope, at the very least.
