Released back in 2004 as the final installment in Pokémon's third generation, Pokémon Emerald saw players travel to the Hoenn Region where they are tasked with conquering a series of eight Pokémon Gyms. Doing so would put them in front of the Elite Four and the Hoenn League Champion. However, with two criminal organizations vying to harness the power of a legendary Pokémon in order to achieve enough power for their own goals, you soon realize that getting to the top of the leaderboards is the least of your worries.

Receiving positive reviews upon its launch, Pokémon Emerald was praised for its addition of the Battle Frontier along with its story elements, which fans considered to be a great improvement from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

Now over two decades on and Pokémon Emerald is back, but it is bigger and better than ever before. Created by Destvol, Satochu, Popy, Potato, Hurricane, Feiyixiang, and others (translated into English by Luciano fire, Gustavo Neves, and Li Yun) and based on Pokémon Emerald is Pokémon Hyper Emerald, a GBA ROM hack which was first released back in 2024, but has received updates up until January of this year.

Featuring Mega Evolutions, Z-moves Gigantamax, Pokémon moves and skills up to Generation 8, a challenging hard mode, expanded sidequests, and more, this ROM hack is the ultimate Pokémon Emerald experience. Not only that, but back in January, Pokémon Hyper Emerald received another major update that added new content inspired by Pokémon's Gen 8, including fresh plots and features that were introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield. With brand-new special effects, trait and skill development, and a refined combat system, this mod is better than it has ever been before, and now, it is free to download.

If you previously played Pokémon Hyper Emerald ahead of its January 2026 update, here are the new features:

  • Gallade now has access to the Sharpness ability.
  • Fixed a bug where Trainers did not have access to their Pokémon’s Hidden Abilities.
  • Teams revised to have a more balanced difficulty, reducing the use of Legendary Pokémon and the use of mechanics before the player has access.
  • The translation was revised and updated up to Champion Island.

In just a short video, it is easy to see how much detail this ROM hack has, and will be the perfect experience for any classic Pokémon fan.
