If you’re a fan of The Legend of Zelda or Chrono Trigger, you’ll be delighted to know about a gorgeous new RPG that you can play for free right now. The two classic franchises have been revolutionary within their own genres and for the gaming industry as a whole, so it’s no surprise that many games are inspired by them and often pay tribute to their style and gameplay decades later. A new 10/10 RPG inspired by classic Zelda games, for example, has just recently been released.
In addition to this title, you can also check out a new RPG that has just been released in Early Access on Steam. The game in question has a free demo for its players, available through the product page on the storefront. Once you download it, you can play it at any time, no strings attached. Of course, the demo will only give you access to a short portion of the game, but a better understanding of what you can expect from the full version that is currently in development.
The RPG is called Alabaster Dawn. Developed and published by Radical Fish Games, Alabaster Dawn on Steam is an action RPG that entered its Early Access period on May 7, but has had a free demo available for months. The game is a top-down 2.5D action RPG from the creators of CrossCode, originally released in 2018. Alabaster Dawn shares a lot of similarities with the studio’s previous title, from its perspective to its art style, but is unique in its own way.
One of the most notable aspects of this new RPG on Steam is how it seems inspired by both Chrono Trigger and The Legend of Zelda. The game’s perspective, action-based combat, and challenging puzzle sequences are highly reminiscent of classic Zelda games, while its themes, world, and design elements seem somewhat based on the ever-grandious Chrono Trigger.
In Alabaster Dawn, you control Juno, an Outcast Chosen who awakens from deep slumber with the sole purpose of retrieving the gods and people of the world of Tiran Sol, which was ruined by Nyx. While the free demo will offer a small portion of the game, the full version is expected to last between 30 and 60 hours, depending on how you tackle it. This is one of the big game releases in May 2026, and if you want to learn more about it, be sure to play the demo before purchasing it in Early Access.
With fast-paced, fluid combat and a beautiful, detailed world design, Alabaster Dawn has the potential to become one of the biggest indie games this year. Given the fact that it has a free demo on Steam, I’d encourage you to check out this RPG as soon as possible, especially if you’re a fan of Zelda and Chrono Trigger.
