Neal McDonough opened up about his time on Yellowstone and revealed why he refuses to watch the show.

The actor, who is best known for playing the ruthless antagonist Malcolm Beck in season two of the smash-hit Western, said there was a 'painful' reason he does not want to relive the experience.

He clarified his avoidance is not limited to the hit Western drama series, explaining that he does not return to any of his past performances in general.

'I've never seen it. You know, I don't watch any of my stuff,' he said on Wednesday's episode of the Arroyo Grande podcast.

McDonough, 60, discussed his acting process and said he does not want to revisit past experiences, which can be 'traumatic and painful' for him.

The Band of Brothers star said he even skips the the watch parties at his own premieres.

'As a method actor, I can tell you if I look at a frame — that's why I don't watch any of my stuff — if I look at a frame of a show from 20 years ago, I know exactly the thought I was thinking,' he explained.

'I know the song I was thinking about. I know where I was going. So going back, to me, sometimes can be really kind of traumatic and painful,' he continued.

'I'll go to the premieres of our films, and I'll do the red carpet,' he said before adding that he and his longtime wife Ruve McDonough attend events together but leave whenever his movie or show is played on the big screen.

He has been married to the film producer since 2003 and, together, they share five children: daughters Morgan, 20, Catherine, 18, London, 16, and sons Clover, 15, and James, 12.

'Ruve and I will walk in, out the exit, grab a nice dinner someplace, go to the party after,' he added as he shared an example of how he'd play off his absence upon returning to the release party.

'"How'd you like the movie?" "It was great. It was awesome. I loved it." I just don't like to watch myself.'

McDonough said that not watching back his work also allows him to not ruminate over his performances and delivery.

'I was there on the day,' he said. 'I know I did a great job because God gave me a talent.'

He said he feels reassured and confident in his abilities, adding: 'I'm terrible at pounding nails. I'm not very good at telling jokes. But as Ruve said, "Man, you can act." And so I don't need to look to see if it was good or not.

'They keep on hiring me, right? If they keep on hiring, I must be doing something right.'

However, last year McDonogh declared he had lost out on roles after he declaring that he did not want to appear in intimate on-screen scenes.

He also alleged he was fired from one project for refusing to kiss an actress as it would be disrespectful to his real-life wife.

'I was, you know, fired from a show because I wouldn't kiss a woman. No one would hire me because they thought I was this religious nut bag,' he told Fox News Digital.

The actor revealed work dried up and he struggled with alcohol.

McDonough declared that he 'was always a drinker' but explained that it 'became a bad problem' after losing out on roles.

McDonough recalled how his wife eventually intervened and gave him an ultimatum.

'She grabbed me and says, "It's us or the bottle, you choose." And I never looked back.'
