Robert Wood is a writer and editor based out of Cheshire, England. He is the author of 'The False Elephant: and 99 Other Unreasonably Short Stories' - 100 stories, each told in exactly 100 words.

Rob got into comics via Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man and the UK anthology 'The Mighty World of Marvel,' which was running Frank Miller's Daredevil, Classic Hulk and Contest of Champions II.

Prior to journalism, he worked in copywriting and copyedited for Oxford University Press. He is on X as @PinchTwigs and Instagram as roobwoodjourno.

One of the defining aspects of Green Lantern lore is the Corps oath - a mission statement that individual Lanterns use when activating their Power Battery and charging their rings.

However, the Green Lanterns are just one of dozens of factions who draw their power from the Emotional Spectrum, and almost all of them have their own oath, from the Sinestro Corps to the Phantom Lantern.

Here's every official Lantern oath in DC lore, including a few uber-powerful individuals who struck out on their own...

Green Lantern Corps | Green Light of Will

The concept of a 'Lantern Corps' began with the Guardians of the Universe forming the Green Lanterns Corps. Geoff Johns' acclaimed Green Lantern run saw other official groups emerge, with each formalizing themselves as the Green Lantern Corps' equals by establishing their own oath.

The Green Lantern oath is a pretty simple declaration of their intent to fight evil. While not necessary to charge a ring, most Green Lanterns recite it while charging to affirm their commitment to the Corps (and also to time the necessary charge.)

In brightest day, in blackest night,

No evil shall escape my sight.

Let those who worship evil’s might

Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light!

Because the Green Lantern Corps is so massive, with over 7000 members from different alien species, members sometimes customize the oath to suit their outlook, culture or religion.

The most famous instance of this comes from Rot Lop Fan - a Lantern from a species with no concept of visual stimuli, for who the oath was specially rewritten:

Rot Lop Fan: In loudest din or hush profound, My ears catch evil's slightest sound. Let those who toll out evil's knell Beware my power, the F-Sharp Bell!

Kho Khari: Against dishonor and traitor’s flight, I stand beside my clan to fight. With dying breath I claw and bite, Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light!

Barin: In this place of black and grey and dark, The Green Lantern shall be my light, my hope, my strength. All that is good is all I defend. I shall not falter.

In real-life, the Oath was first spoken by the mystically empowered Alan Scott, aka the first Green Lantern (on who more shortly.) In modern canon, the oath was first composed by Hal Jordan and spread by the Guardians of the Universe as a Corps-wide motto.

Green Lantern Alpha Corps

Alpha Lanterns

During a time when the Guardians of the Universe were corrupted, they created an 'internal affairs' of cyborg Lanterns, known as the Alpha Lanterns. Focused on policing the Corps itself rather than exacting justice across the galaxy, the Alpha Lanterns had their own oath:

In days of peace, in nights of war,

Obey the laws forever more!

Misconduct must be answered for,

Swear us the chosen: the Alpha Corps!

Red Lantern Corps | Red Light of Rage

atrocitus and the red lantern corps

The fiery Red Lanterns - headed by Atrocitus - were born out of a massacre caused by the Guardians of the Universe. While often cast as villains, the Red Lanterns often have a righteous mindset, so it makes sense for them to have their own oath:

With blood and rage of crimson red,

We fill men’s souls with darkest dread,

And twist your mind with pain and hate,

We’ll burn you all, that is your fate.

The final line refers to the Red Lanterns' unique power of napalm-like blood, which they can shape into various forms thanks to their unique Power Rings.

Agent Orange | Orange Light of Avarice

DC's Orange Lantern Larfleeze cradles his lantern

A fan-favorite character, Larfleeze is an individual totally taken over by his band of the Emotional Spectrum, with little of his own personality left. Learning of the Green Lantern oath, he instantly desired his own, but he doesn't exactly have the mindset of a poet:

What’s mine is mine and mine and mine

And mine and mine and mine and mine!

NOT YOURS!

This oath isn't Corps-wide, because the 'Orange Lantern Corps' are all energy constructs created by Larfleeze - the bound souls of anyone who tried to take his power and died in the attempt.

Sinestro Corps | Yellow Light of Fear

Sinestro and Corps feature in DC comics

After being exiled from the Green Lantern Corps for his fascistic takeover of his home planet, Sinestro gathered the galaxy's most terrifying killers to enforce order through terror. However, with one of the biggest egos in the galaxy, Sinestro built his group to worship him just as much as fear itself, and their oath reflects it:

In blackest day, in brightest night,

Beware your fears made into light.

Let those who try to stop what’s right,

Burn like my power, Sinestro’s might!

On the occasions where others have taken over the Sinestro Corps, the oath remains the same but another name is used in the last line - for example, Sinestro's ambitious right-hand Arkillo.

Blue Lantern Corps | Blue Light of Hope

Saint Walker and the Blue Lantern Corps speaking their oath while aiming their Power Rings in DC comics

Founded by rogue Guardians of the Universe Ganthet and Sayd, the Blue Lantern Corps was built to mimic (and support) the Green Lantern Corps in preparation for the prophecy of the 'Blackest Night.' Because of this, their oath explicitly references the prophecy of that cosmic conflagration:

In fearful day, in raging night,

With strong hearts full, our souls ignite.

When all seems lost in the War of Light,

Look to the stars, for hope burns bright!

As well as their official oath, the Blue Lanterns often declare the shorter motto "All will be well!" when arriving to help others. This motto comes from the first Blue Lantern, Saint Walker.

The Indigo Tribe | Indigo Light of Compassion

Indigo Tribe Power Ring DC Comics

Founded secretly by celebrated Green Lantern Abin Sur, the Indigo Tribe possess unique Power Rings that seek out the galaxy's most evil people and force them to act with compassion.

The Indigo Tribe speak in an untranslatable language, and the precise meaning of their oath is unclear (though it clearly references their founder):

To lorek san, bor nakka mur

Natromo faan tornek wot ur

Ter Lantern ker lo Abin Sur

Taan lek lek nok - Formorrow Sur!

The Star Sapphires | Violet Light of Love

Carol Ferris as Star Sapphire/Violet Lantern

The Star Sapphires were founded by female Oans who split from the Guardians of the Universe, resolving to use their own Corps to curb the Green Lanterns by empowering and controlling those they loved most. Their oath is a deliberate counterpart to that of the GL Corps:

For hearts long lost and full of fright,

For those alone in blackest night,

Accept our ring and join our fight,

Love conquers all with violet light!

The Star Sapphires' mission has changed over the years, and they're now seen as a volatile but heroic presence in the galaxy, empowering those who have lost love rather than directly targeting the loved ones of Green Lanterns.

Black Hand/Black Lantern Corps | Death

dc's black hand with a black lantern ring

Powered by death itself, the Black Lantern Corps were zombified thralls controlled by the godlike Nekron. Most Black Lanterns aren't true individuals, so they don't use the oath themselves. Mostly, the rings merely order their hosts to "RISE!"

Instead, this oath was recited by William Hand, aka the Black Hand, as he began a ritual to empower Nekron. Like the Blue Lanterns, it references the Blackest Night prophecy, which Hand sought to fulfill:

The Blackest Night falls from the skies,

The darkness grows as all light dies.

We crave your hearts and your demise,

By my Black Hand, the dead shall rise!

Strangely, the corresponding White Lantern Corps - powered by life itself - have never been shown to have an official oath. The closest DC has come is showing the Life Entity declaring "LIVE!" when resurrecting the members of its Corps.

The Ultraviolet Corps | Invisible Light of Shame

Ultraviolet Lantern Power Ring DC Comics

A hidden aspect of the Emotional Spectrum, Ultraviolent Lanterns draw their power from (and are controlled by) the godlike Umbrax. When Umbrax got its tentacles into the mind of Sinestro, the former Green Lantern and Sinestro Corps leader forged a Corps in direct mockery of his old allies, complete with their own oath:

By shield of day, and shield of night,

We feed and grow, beyond all sight.

Your darkest self shall be our knight,

Wield the sword of unseen light!

Dawnbreaker's Lantern Oath

Batman The Dawnbreaker

Born in the Dark Multiverse and created by Batman's fear of his own unstoppable willpower, Dawnbreaker is an evil version of Bruce Wayne who creates constructs out of living darkness.

This version of Bruce was corrupted by his fear and hatred, warping his Power Ring into a lethal weapon. Confronted by the Green Lantern Corps of his home universe, he killed them all and adopted a mocking version of their oath:

With darkness black, I choke the light!

No brightest day escapes my sight!

I turn the dawn to midnight!

Beware my power - Dawnbreaker's might!
