Warning! Spoilers ahead for Uncanny X-Men #8!

The X-Men franchise has finally confirmed that Professor X is not the mysterious “Inmate X” that the comics has been teasing – and in fact, that the character's true identity is far more dangerous, as Marvel unveils a new species of mutant, whose powers exceed Charles Xavier, and even his antagonistic "twin," perennial X-villain Cassandra Nova.

In Uncanny X-Men #8 – written by Gail Simone, with art by Javier Garrón – it discovered that Scurvy, Charles Xavier, and the late Harvey X are all part of a subspecies of mutants dubbed “the Avians” of which there are five. When the X-Men leave Graymalkin prison, Warden Corina Ellis reveals that Inmate X is the last Avian and their ultimate weapon against the X-Men.

With this new groundbreaking information, it’s confirmed that this unknown mutant is the strongest out of the known telepathic Avians and the X-Men are set to face off against one of Marvel's most powerful mutants yet.

This mystifying mutant requires significantly more security than Professor X and is confirmed to be stronger by the villains, meaning his power-level rivals previous Avians depicted such as Scurvy and Harvey X. Scurvy is shown to be able to psychically take on both Rogue and Cyclops’ X-Men teams while using his astral projection to battle Xavier and, before his death, Harvy X was shown to be an absurdly powerful clairvoyant. If this final Avian outclasses both Scurvy and Harvey X’s incredible feats, there's no question that Inmate X will be a threat that rivals even Marvel’s most substantial telepaths.

The built-up anticipation of Inmate X’s reveal has many fans theorizing whether this high-level mutant will be a familiar face or a whole new character entirely.

The last Avian is described as the villain’s true "big gun,” with Corina Ellis comparing Inmate X to a massive space satellite that could take out both the X-Men’s Louisiana and Alaska bases instantly. The Avians are a new revelation and what defines an Avian is still unknown, but Scurvy has confirmed that there are four Avians still alive, all of whose powers align with Charles Xavier’s. The built-up anticipation of Inmate X’s reveal has many fans theorizing whether this high-level mutant will be a familiar face or a whole new character entirely.

Since the last Avian is set to be used as a weapon of mass destruction against the X-Men, many fans suspect Inmate X will be one of the already existing Omega-level telepaths in the X-Men roster. One potential candidate for Inmate X is Legion, Charles Xavier’s son, who shares similar powers to his father, and it’s been established that Charles Xavier is a part of this Avian mutant subspecies due to his abilities. Vulcan is another possible contender that fans have mentioned due to his status as an omega-level mutant with the ability to manipulate energy.
