Robert Wood is a writer and editor based out of Cheshire, England. He is the author of 'The False Elephant: and 99 Other Unreasonably Short Stories' - 100 stories, each told in exactly 100 words.

Rob got into comics via Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man and the UK anthology 'The Mighty World of Marvel,' which was running Frank Miller's Daredevil, Classic Hulk and Contest of Champions II.

Prior to journalism, he worked in copywriting and copyedited for Oxford University Press. He is on X as @PinchTwigs and Instagram as roobwoodjourno.

The X-Men's brawler just unleashed a feral redesign, as Wolverine becomes a werewolf in Marvel lore, complete with adamantium claws.

Wolverine Goes Full Werewolf in New Transformation

In the recent Uncanny X-Men #24 - from Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles - the X-Men battle against the Legion of Monsters. As the team mix it up with Elsa Bloodstone, the Manphibian, Frankenstein's Monster, Morbius the Living Vampire and the Living Mummy, Wolverine clashes claws with the Werewolf-by-Night.

Werewolf-by-Night scores an early victory, tearing open Logan's carotid artery and knocking him unconscious. While Wolverine rallies, the end of the comic sees him transform and leap towards Rogue, with Elsa threatening that the mutant team will be "dead by daylight."

While the Legion of Monsters are generally misunderstood heroes, this storyline sees them controlled by a mysterious mystic intent on creating a new version of the Darkhold.

This isn't Wolverine's first time as a werewolf, but it's easily the best-looking. David Marquez gives Logan gigantic fangs and turns his wild hair and bushy sideburns into part of the monster's design. After this transformation, Wolverine is now fighting with twenty-six claws, not just six.

Wolverine Isn't the X-Men's Only New Monster

x-men's gambit as a dragon

While Wolverine's transformation puts him on the monsters' side, things may be even worse than they seem. As Jubilee faces off with Morbius, he threatens to turn her into a vampire. That would actually be a return to the character's 2010 status quo, when she spent a few years fighting her urge for blood as one of the undead.

Likewise, solicit information for issue #28 suggests Gambit will soon transform into a cannibalistic dragon, due to his theft of Agamotto's Eye of Power (indeed, he's already started biting his teammates - something they were confronting him about when the Legion of Monsters turned up.)

Wolverine's healing factor can reject most diseases and infections, including the supernatural, and he's fought off zombie and vampire bites in the past. It's likely he won't stay a werewolf for long, however the real danger is who he'll be responsible for hurting before regaining his human form.

Werewolf-by-Night and Wolverine just mixed it up in a vicious battle, and contrary to what many fans assumed, the lupine antihero came out as the victor, leaving Logan as a bestial monster who's a danger to his own team.

Uncanny X-Men #24 is available now from Marvel Comics.
