Pixar is bringing another original animated movie to theaters, with Hoppers debuting on March 6. While the Disney-owned studio got customers used to seeing their newest titles directly on streaming during the pandemic, there is a renewed focus on making features for theaters and giving them exclusive runs on the big screen.
This has delivered huge box office hits (Inside Out 2) but also one of Pixar's worst performers in Elio. The latter raised more concerns about the audience's interest in seeing the studio's non-franchise offerings in theaters, making Hoppers an important case study. Some viewers may feel more willing to wait until it's on streaming to experience the original animal-driven story.
As a Pixar release, Hoppers will stream on Disney+, even though the studios have not confirmed exactly when that will occur. But, there is years of data regarding Disney's streaming history that makes it quite easy to project when Pixar's newest animated movie will be on the streaming service.
Hoppers Should Release On Disney+ In June 2026
The opportunity to watch Hoppers on streaming is expected to come this summer. Disney has one of the better track records among Hollywood's major studios when it comes to giving its films longer theatrical runs, and that has been no different with Pixar, whose movies tend to take about three months to debut on Disney+.
There are two different schedules the animation studio has used for its titles in the last three years. Fellow original features Elemental and Elio both released on Disney+ after 89 days. The studio's hit sequel Inside Out 2 took a bit longer, waiting 103 days.
While Hoppers' box office projections are promising, it is not expected to be anywhere close to Pixar's emotional 2024 sequel. The best-case scenario is arguably that it will perform as well as Elemental did (just with a better start). And since it's also a non-IP play for the studio, following the 89-day gap schedule is likely.
Applying that same timeline here creates a predicted streaming release date of June 3 for Hoppers on Disney+. If things go better than expected in theaters and Disney opts to its delay at-home availability, then the absolute latest it should debut is June 17. Both dates are Wednesdays, which is typically when new movies debut on Disney+.
Overall, Hoppers should be in theaters for the next three months, with it likely losing its exclusivity on the big screen in May. Disney typically releases Pixar movies on digital about two months after they release in cinemas. May 5 is our projected PVOD release date for Hoppers, giving it a 60-day exclusive theatrical run like Elio and Elemental.
If you don't want to wait at least two months before the movie is available at home in some form, then heading to the theater is the only way to see Pixar's acclaimed animated movie. Showtimes for Hoppers in your area can be found at the links below for anyone interested:
