When it comes to figuring out the best movies based on video games, it can be a tall task. Mostly, it's not a genre that has produced great projects, with films like Super Mario Bros. and Doom missing the mark. Even popular films like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter are liked more for their camp than for their quality.

That has changed in recent years, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie being a monster hit, while Sonic the Hedgehog, Detective Pikachu, and Gran Turismo received strong reviews. However, the video game film that has the highest rating on Rotten Tomatoes is not from a game you likely know.

Werewolves Within Is RT's Highest-Rated Video Game Movie

The video game movie with the best score on Rotten Tomatoes is 2021's Werewolves Within. The film sits at 86% from critics, with an 80% rating from audience members. It's likely not the movie you'd think of for this category, since it's not all that well-known.

Werewolves Within stars Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, George Basil, Harvey Guillén, Michaela Watkins, and more. The story centers on a group of people who get trapped in a small Vermont town during a snowstorm and suspect that one person among them is a werewolf.

Critical reception for the indie film was strong, with praise going to the screenplay, comedy elements, and the mystery at the center. Those who came in expecting they'd get a horror story will be disappointed, since the mystery and comedy are the focal points, but it's a great time with a talented cast.

Werewolves Within Is A Little-Known Game

Characters from the Werewolves Within Game

When Werewolves Within came out in 2021, most people weren't aware that it was based on a video game. That's because the game itself is a relatively little-known, niche release. It arrived in 2016 and is made by a major video game publisher, Ubisoft, yet it still flew under the radar.

The game follows the same basic premise, as a town is attacked by a werewolf and the players are tasked with figuring out who among them is the wolf in disguise. However, the game has a medieval and more fantasy setting than the film adaptation. Like the movie though, the game was well-received.

Werewolves Within was met with positive reviews, receiving a 76 on Metacritic and a 7/10 on GameSpot, while also being ranked by Official UK PlayStation Magazine as one of the 10 best VR games on the system.

Turning such a small game into a movie was a risk and while it didn't make a ton of money, the positive reception for Werewolves Within proves that it was a great call. Time will tell if another video game adaptation can top it on Rotten Tomatoes.
