The announcement of The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2018 during Bethesda's showcase was understandably met with a ton of excitement by fans of the franchise, most of whom had been blown away by Skyrim and couldn't wait to see what the developer was going to bring them next.
That was almost eight years ago, and we have heard almost nothing about the game ever since, leading almost all of that excitement to be replaced by desperation. Given that there were only five years between the release of the fourth and fifth game in the series, the fact that we're still sitting here 15 years later without another release is pretty tough to take.
As such, any time Bethesda Head Honcho Todd Howard appears in public for a relatively rare interview, it's an inevitability that he's going to be asked just how far along they are in the development process. Well, that has happened once again, and Howard's response certainly won't come as good news to many.
IGN recently sat down with Howard as part of Bethesda's campaign around the launch of the new Starfield DLC, and during that conversation, the topic of The Elder Scrolls VI reared its ugly head once again. When asked about the reveal of the game specifically, Howard simply responded by saying, "Just pretend we didn't announce it. Doesn't exist."
Now, that obviously doesn't make it sound like we're going to get a further look at the game any time soon, but Howard did further detail how announcing games in the way they did previously isn't his favored way of doing things.
"If you look back at the Fallout 76/Starfield/Elder Scrolls 6 announcements [from Bethesda's E3 2018 showcase], that was really about informing our audience, because when you're going to do something new, everyone's going to ask, ‘What about Elder Scrolls 6? What about a single-player game?’ And we did it that way, but it's not my preference."
The Elder Scrolls Fans Still Have A Lot Of Waiting To Do
Whatever Howard's slightly dismissive quote does mean in the long term, it's pretty clear that The Elder Scrolls community still has plenty of waiting to do before the new game drops. The release of Oblivion Remastered did at least give them something to do for a while, with a Fallout 3 Remaster also supposedly on the way, but nothing is going to really placate the community apart from the big new release dropping as soon as possible.
