Indiana Jones has arguably the best adventure movie of the last 100 years. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Harrison Ford's adventure series created a cultural icon, one who has continued to go on daring missions for over 40 years. The Mummy copied many aspects of Indiana Jones to launch a hit trilogy for Brendan Fraser in 1999.
More recently, Disney has been central to making big adventure franchises. National Treasure gave Nicholas Cage two movies to explore American history and myths, taking even more cues from Indiana Jones. The studio also found a ton of success by bringing audiences to sea-based adventures through Pirates of the Caribbean.
While new installments of The Mummy, National Treasure, and Pirates of the Caribbean are in various stages of development, Jumanji is the action franchise that is much closer to coming out. Another sequel, called Jumanji: Open World, with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black is about to crash into theaters.
Jumanji: Open World's Release Is Officially 6 Months Away
Sony Pictures gave the Jumanji movie franchise another life in 2017, bringing the all-star cast together for a tropical adventure as the board game-based series received a video game upgrade. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a huge hit, making $962 million, so Sony quickly moved to make a sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level, which made $801 million in 2019.
After seven years, the long-awaited next installment is now just six months away, as Jumanji: Open World is on Sony's slate for a December 25 release date. It's once again directed by Jake Kasdan and sees Johnson's Smolder Bravestone, Hart's Mouse Finbar, Black's Shelly Oberon, and Gillan's Ruby Roundhouse return in leading capacities.
Many other franchise veterans will return in the new entry, such as Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, and original franchise star Bebe Neuwirth as Nora Shepherd. Plot details for Jumanji: Open World have yet to be revealed, but the story is expected to continue exploring how the game comes into the real world in some capacity.
Despite competing with Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, Sony has every expectation that the movie will be a hit. This is a franchise that has made $2.1 billion across four previous films (including the original Jumanji and Zathura). Audiences will now get a chance to go on another adventure in this world after a big break.
Will Jumanji: Open World Be The Franchise's End?
The success of the Jumanji movies, especially with this cast, has made the franchise one of Sony's biggest in recent years. Even with all the money the studio has made from it, there is no clear direction for the franchise's future after Jumanji: Open World.
There have currently been no discussions about a fourth film featuring this main cast. One cannot be ruled out, especially if Open World does big business in theaters, but it does feel less likely. Johnson is looking to do fewer blockbusters, Black has a new franchise with Minecraft, and other cast members are also busy.
It would likely take a record-breaking box office figure for the entire quartet to agree to come back for more movies, and for Sony to feel like they were necessary to the franchise's future. But even if Open World is the last adventure with Bravestone, Mouse, Shelly, and Ruby, this universe would not have to wrap up completely.
There are many paths forward for Jumanji to make more movies with new humans, new game avatars, or an entirely new concept. A reboot of some kind can keep the franchise going for years on end, if Sony does want to continue it. Jumanji: Open World probably won't be the last Jumanji movie we ever see, but it could be with the current story and characters.
