In an interview with Polygon, Kripke said the Jensen Ackles-led series has been written and promises a "new adventure" for The Boys fans.
Eric Kripke: It has a season-wide story that has a satisfying ending, but then it definitely opens a door into a new adventure and a new world, and we would love to keep it going. That is up to the powers that be.
Kripke's comments came after he was asked about another The Boys spin-off, Gen V, getting canceled after just two seasons. While the show came to an abrupt end, he told Polygon he'd like to find a way to keep the Gen V characters in the Vought universe.
Eric Kripke: I think there is more story among the Gen V kids. It won't necessarily be in Gen V, but hopefully, we can get some more Vought series going so that we can continue their story.
Gen V's cancellation won't have an impact on Vought Rising, either, Kripke noted, with his plans firm and in progress for the coming series.
While there's no confirmed release date yet, Vought Rising is set to explore the origins of Vought in the 1950s, depicting the early exploits of Ackles' Soldier Boy and the sinister actions of another Supe known as Stormfront [Aya Cash], initially named Clara Vought. The murder mystery will dive into the complex history of Vought and the dark legacy of its central characters.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Kripke explained how Soldier Boy's new backstory reveal in season 5, episode 6 of The Boys, sets up the forthcoming prequel series, particularly the episode's focus on the Supe's past, and the confirmation that Soldier Boy had romantic, and albeit problematic, feelings for Stormfront, back when she was Clara Vought and Liberty. Vought Rising will also shed light on Soldier Boy's complicated relationship with Bombsight, following their fight near the end of the episode.
Eric Kripke: In no way will I ever ask the audience to sympathize with Stormfront. She's a Nazi, and she sucks. Soldier Boy? I think, if it's teasing anything, it's teasing that he really had feelings for Clara more than he had originally let on, and that you'll see a lot of that play out in Vought Rising. You'll understand a little bit more of what Soldier Boy and Bombsight's relationship is, and why they resent each other, in Vought Rising.
While The Boys provides context to the Vought universe and its inner workings, Kripke said Vought Rising is very much a standalone series, and told ScreenRant that having watched The Boys is not a prerequisite for viewers who will tune into the prequel.
Eric Kripke: We always try to hit the right balance, where it provides a little bit of context and some good Easter eggs. But by no means do you have to watch The Boys to enjoy Vought Rising. In fact, we just had some audience testing with some people who had never seen The Boys, and they liked Vought Rising on its own. So, that is for sure the goal.
The Boys, meanwhile, is currently in its fifth and final season, with just two episodes to go, as the beloved series continues to build off Soldier Boy's backstory and deliver a definitive conclusion to the seasons-long conflict between Homelander and Billy Butcher.
New episodes of The Boys air every Wednesday at 3:00 a.m. ET/12:00 a.m. PT on Prime Video.
