Wagner Moura Reacts to Making History With Oscar Nomination
If your favorite season is awards, then you might have noticed it’s running a bit long this year.
In fact, the 2026 Oscars won’t be airing until March 14, positioning itself later than the ceremony has in years past.
Hollywood’s biggest night—this year hosted by Conan O’Brien at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles—traditionally marks the end of the awards season that begins every January. For 2026, it officially kicked off on Jan. 4 with the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, but that ceremony may have had its own domino effect, pushing the 2026 Golden Globes to the second week of January for a change.
And it wasn’t just the Oscars which fell later this year: The 2026 Actor Awards (previously known as the SAG Awards) didn’t happen until March for the first time in over 20 years. Though the Actor Awards had typically been held in January, it has been pushed back to late February since the COVID-19 pandemic and, this time, landed on March 1.
While the timing of the Oscars was also affected by the pandemic—with the 2021 ceremony not happening until April 25—the ceremony had another worldwide phenomenon to contend with this year: the 2026 Winter Olympics, which ran from Feb. 6 to Feb. 22 in Milano Cortino. In fact, the 2022 Oscars were also pushed back to March 27 following that year’s Winter Games and the Super Bowl.
But keeping the show in March is actually a return to form for the ceremony, considering most of its 98 shows have taken place in March and April. However, all of that changed with the 2004 Oscars, which took place on Feb. 29—the first ceremony to occur during February since 1942.

As the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences explained in 2002 when the announcement was first made, the change was done to help bolster the show’s ratings.
''The basic reason for doing this is to improve the position of the Academy Awards with regard to ratings and viewership,'' John Pavlik, the Academy’s former director of communications, told The New York Times at the time. ''The ratings have been dipping in recent years, and this is just one of a number of things we're trying to get those ratings up.''

And the change was a welcome one, with Terry Press—the former marketing chief at DreamWorks—noting that it helped cut down on the redundancy of awards season.
''By the time you get to the Academy Awards now, they're almost anticlimactic,'' she told the NYT. ''The same people tend to win over and over again. So by Oscar time you've already seen Julia Roberts six times in six different dresses. The Oscars needed to do this to restore their own luster.''
Regardless of when the Oscars happen, it’s sure to be a night full of excitement. Keep reading for a look at some of the nominees who are hoping to have their names read at the 2026 Academy Awards.
