Showbox has unveiled the first trailer for “Colony,” the new Korean action thriller from “Train to Busan” director Yeon Sang-ho.

The film, which stars Gianna Jun as a scientist caught in a rapidly escalating viral outbreak, has been selected for the Midnight Screening section at the Cannes Film Festival.

The story centers on Se-jeong, a biotechnology professor who is attending an industry conference when a fast-mutating virus is released, sending the event into chaos. With those exposed beginning to change, authorities lock down the entire facility, leaving survivors trapped inside with a threat that keeps growing. The film’s logline reads: “As the virus spreads, the order begins to mutate.”

Gianna Jun, known internationally for “Assassination” and “Kingdom: Ashin of the North,” leads a deep ensemble. Koo Kyo-hwan, who appeared in both “Escape” and Netflix series “Parasyte: The Grey,” co-stars alongside Ji Chang-wook (“Revolver,” “The Worst of Evil”), Shin Hyun-been (“The Ugly,” “Reborn Rich”), Kim Shin-rock (“Hellbound,” “Sweet Home”), and Go Soo (“The Fortress,” “Parole Examiner Lee”).

“Colony” is produced by Wowpoint and Smilegate in association with Midnight Studio, with Showbox presenting. Showbox is handling international sales.

Yeon built his reputation as an animator, directing the dark social allegories “The King of Pigs” (2011) and “The Fake” (2013) before crossing into live action with “Train to Busan” and its animated companion piece “Seoul Station,” both released in 2016. He followed the zombie thriller with the live-action sequel “Peninsula” in 2020, then moved into television with “Hellbound,” the Netflix series that launched in November 2021 and became the platform’s most-watched series within 24 hours of release.
