Each year, some of the best performances on the big screen come from actors who are having their breakthrough moment. It can come in the form of an actor's debut, where they blow the audience away, or it can happen for a solid performer who is finally getting a true chance to shine.

The 2000s are a great era to look back on to consider the best breakout performances. Each year of the decade features at least one actor who stole the show and put themselves on the map. Since so much time has passed since the 2000s, we have seen what became of each of these actors, as well.

We know if the breakout performance truly sent them to the next level and made them into a major star who becomes a household name. In the case of each of the actors chosen for the 2000s, the future was positive for them. They've all grown as performers and become legitimate stars.

These actors broke out in all kinds of genres. Some became stars thanks to critically acclaimed performances in Oscar-contending dramas, some did so in blockbuster superhero films, some made their name thanks to a fun romantic comedy, and one actor even broke out in two totally different roles from the same year.

2000: Hugh Jackman - X-Men

Hugh Jackman was never going to win any awards for his role in X-Men, but he truly broke out thanks to it. At the time of his casting as Wolverine, a coveted role, Jackman was a relative unknown who had only appeared in a couple of Australian movies. Fans weren't too sure about the choice either.

Jackman was tall and handsome, which aren't exactly traits associated with Wolverine. Despite that, Jackman made the role his own and proved his star power to the point where he returned as Wolverine for 15 years. In many ways, his later performances as the character are far better, but it all started here.

2001: Anne Hathaway - The Princess Diaries

When The Princess Diaries hit the scene, a lot of people kind of wrote it off as just another teen comedy. They didn't expect it to have the staying power that it did, as it's held up today as a classic. A big reason for its success is lead actress Anne Hathaway, who put herself on the map here.

Hathaway is incredibly charismatic as Mia Thermopolis in what was her first feature film role. She carried the movie, along with the great Julie Andrews, and showed that she was a star on the rise. Hathaway returned for the sequel and has had a stellar career, including five movies releasing in 2026.

2002: Nicholas Hoult - About A Boy

There were two options that stood out for breakout roles in 2002. One was Kirsten Stewart in Panic Room, years before she became a star in Twilight. The other is Nicholas Hoult in About a Boy, which was incredible work by such a young actor.

The film follows Hugh Grant's Will as a man who invents a fake child to meet single moms; he forms a bond with the kid, Marcus. Hoult is tremendous as Marcus, bringing a ton of heart to this comedy film and showcasing talent way above his age. It took a few years before he became a steady star, though.

2003: Scarlett Johansson - Lost In Translation

Bill Murray is one of the most respected comedic actors of his time, so acting alongside him when you haven't been established is a tall task. Thankfully, Scarlett Johansson was up to that challenge despite only appearing in smaller films like Home Alone 3 to that point, though Ghost World featured a glimpse at her talent.

Johansson was so good as Charlotte, a young American who befriends Murray's Bob while on vacation in Japan, that she earned the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while also getting nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards. From that point on, Johnasson was a hot commodity.

2004: Rachel McAdams - The Notebook & Mean Girls

Rachel McAdams was so good in 2004 that she appeared in two breakout movies, with completely different characters in each. First, there was her iconic work as Regina George, the meanest girl in Mean Girls. She expertly played the antagonist in what many consider the best teen comedy of its time.

Just a few months later, McAdams portrayed Allie in The Notebook, which many believe is the greatest romance film of its time. To pull off two legendary characters who are total opposites in just a few short months is incredible. Whether as vicious Regina or wholesome Allie, McAdams was phenomenal.

2005: Amy Adams - Junebug

These days, one of the things that Amy Adams is most known for is how often she's been up for an Academy Award. She has been nominated six times, yet has never won, which is a shame given how good she is. It all started somewhere, though, and Junebug was that time for Adams.

The little-known movie sees Adams star as Ashley, a pregnant woman who forms a bond with her sister-in-law. Adams was so good in her role that she landed her first Oscar nomination. It served as Adams' breakout after years of struggling to find major work.

2006: Abigail Breslin - Little Miss Sunshine

Every so often, the breakout performer of a year is a child and in the 2000s, it actually happened more than once. Abigail Breslin is fantastic in Little Miss Sunshine and she manages to steal the show in a cast that also includes Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Paul Dano, and more.

The movie follows a dysfunctional family as they embark on a road trip so the youngest member can enter a child beauty pageant. Breslin's performance was tremendous, earning her an Academy Award nomination at just 10 years old.

2007: Saoirse Ronan - Atonement

A year after Breslin, another young actor made waves. Saoirse Ronan delivers the best performance in a star-studded cast that also includes Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Juno Temple, to name a few.

Based on the novel of the same name, Atonement sees Ronan portray Briony, a young girl who ruins the lives of her sister and her sister's lover when she perpetuates a lie. Her work truly made her a star, as Ronan is just 32 years old yet has been nominated for four Academy Awards.

2008: Dev Patel - Slumdog Millionaire

It seems like pretty much everyone was talking about Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, which is impressive given the year was also home to The Dark Knight, WALL-E, and other greats. Part of the film's success comes from Dev Patel's lead performance.

Patel plays Jamal Malik, a poor boy who competes on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and uses his experiences to help answer questions. He was nominated for the BAFTA and won Best Young Actor at the Critics' Choice Award, kickstarting a career filled with great performances.

2009: Anna Kendrick - Up In The Air

When Up in the Air came out, Anna Kendrick was only really known as one of Bella's friends in Twilight. That changed when she put on an incredible performance as Natalie Keener and blew audiences away next to George Clooney.

Kendrick brought an earnestness to Natalie and her chemistry in each scene with Clooney was spectacular. She proved that she could hang with the greats and landed an Oscar nomination for it. Since then, Kendrick has led her own franchise, starred in great films, and even works as a director now.
