If you are looking to net a victory on today’s Connections puzzle, there are plenty of ways these clues can help you get it. Today’s puzzle has a set of words that look like something they aren’t, and there is a mix of other conditions that can make it difficult as well. However, there are a lot of details that can help you solve the puzzle once you spot them, so we have compiled a list of those details as clues for you to use.
If you are looking for a different puzzle to try out, you should play the NYT’s Wordle puzzle. It is very similar to the Connections puzzle, but it wants you to solve for a single word rather than put groups of them together. You also have slightly more chances with the Wordle puzzle, as it gives you 6 attempts instead of 4. You also get slightly more hints in the form of knowing what letters are incorrect when you guess them, which helps you solve the word quite quickly.
Today's Connections Category Hints
JANUARY 05 #574
Clues can sometimes be hard to come by in a typical puzzle, with a lot of red herrings and words placed to make you think of something other than what you are looking for. There are lots of possibilities, and almost all words can be connected to each other given the chance. However, those details mentioned earlier can help you sort the right words into the right categories, and here they are:
- One category is about how busy something is or isn’t
- One category is about the words used to describe getting something from your efforts
- One category is about four things you can find on particular device
- One category is about four words that come before a different word - that word is something you’d find at a concert

CALM |
QUIET |
SLEEPY |
SLOW |
This category was a little tricky, but not too tricky. SLOW is one of the words that I thought might go elsewhere. There was an interesting fake category with some of the other words that I thought might be a group of road signs. However, once I dismissed that it was a matter of figuring out what else SLOW could go with. CALM and QUIET made sense, but I thought perhaps MUTE did too. When that wasn’t the right answer, I traded MUTE for SLEEPY and luckily got it right then.

GROSS |
MAKE |
NET |
YIELD |
This one also had one of those tricky words in the form of YIELD. However, once that was out of the way, I saw GROSS and MAKE and realized that they might all go together. SNARE is something I considered going here, but I dismissed it when I saw NET. I thought it fit better and I was right. SNARE also means to get in some way, but it usually doesn’t convey that you have earned it, at least not like the other words do.

HOME |
MUTE |
STOP |
VOLUME |
Once I knew STOP didn’t go with the other road sign words, it was a matter of figuring out what to put it with. When I saw VOLUME and MUTE, I thought it was fairly likely they went together. They both exist in the same sort of sound space. EAR and SNARE might as well, seeing as they both have to do with music, but it wasn’t the same. Seeing HOME, however, made me think about remote controls and STOP is also something commonly found there, and luckily it was the correct guess.

EAR |
KETTLE |
OIL |
SNARE |
The last category I was very unsure on, but now that I know what it is it does make sense. While the words don’t look like they belong together at all, that is usually how the purple category ends up. And at least these words make more sense than the elements of a surreal painting. I also think that SNARE could get you to the right category without blind guessing in a way that many of the words from that puzzle did not. It was a close call for me today, but at least I got there before the end.
