Timothee Chalamet glowers in sunglasses as fans mock his Oscars outfit amid opera and ballet backlash

Timothee Chalamet wore a stone-faced expression as he hit the red carpet at the Oscars in a look that has been derided by fans.

The 30-year-old is up for Best Actor for Marty Supreme, the Josh Safdie picture based on the life of a real underground ping-pong player in 1950s New York.

His opponents include Michael B Jordan's dual role in Ryan Coogler's Sinners and Leonardo DiCaprio's turn in Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. 

Chalamet's pomposity in interviews has led to souring public opinion about him, with sources exclusively telling the Daily Mail about a 'Stop Timmy' campaign gathering steam ahead of the Academy Awards. 

The actor, whose mother and sister both trained in ballet, then poured fuel on the backlash by remarking that 'no one cares about' opera and ballet. 

Amid the furor, Chalamet arrived at Sunday's Oscars in an all-white ensemble of a suit and tie, clashed against a massive pair of black shades.

He could be seen graciously approaching the ecstatic fans kept at bay by a crowd control fence, where he posed so they could snap selfies with him.

Fans roasted the ensemble on X, formerly Twitter, where one groused: 'he doesn't deserve to come near that Oscar due to this atrocity of a fit.'

Another wondered: 'dear lord Timmy, what on earth inspired this monstrosity,' as one observer joked that the young movie star resembled a 'milkman.' 

One dismissed the getup as a 'mess,' while another said in a nod to his romance with Kylie Jenner: 'He needs fashion lessons from the Kardashian/Jenner clan.'

Jenner, whom Chalamet has been dating for three years and whom he thanked in his acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards and Critics' Choice Awards, made a splash when she attended this year's Academy Awards.

Although she skipped the red carpet, she materialized inside the Dolby Theatre in a sizzling scarlet Schiaparelli dress that emphasized her hourglass figure.

The world-famous reality star served up a generous helping of cleavage in the plunging dress as she made her way to her seat beside her Oscar-nominated boyfriend.

Sunday night's ceremony came days after Steven Spielberg offered a slyly withering response to Chalamet's swipe at opera and ballet.

The 30-year-old made the unfiltered remark while talking to Matthew McConaughey about his hopes that movie theaters are able to survive.

He then added that 'I don't want to be working in ballet or opera or, you know, things where it's like: "Hey, keep this thing alive," even though no one cares about this anymore,' in an interview for Variety's Actors on Actors.

'All respect to the ballet and opera people out there,' added Chalamet, who is nominated for a best actor Oscar this Sunday for the ping pong movie Marty Supreme. 'I just lost 14 cents in viewership, I just took shots for no reason.'

His comments drew outrage from theatrical personalities ranging from ballerina Misty Copeland to legend of stage and screen Nathan Lane.

This week, three-time Oscar-winner Spielberg has added his voice to the choir of venom against Chalamet - after insiders exclusively told the Daily Mail about the 'Stop Timmy' campaign gathering steam ahead of the Academy Awards. 

Spielberg slyly inveighed against Chalamet while discussing his own hopes for movie theaters during an onstage interview at the South by Southwest film festival.

'But for me, the real experience comes when we can influence a community to congregate in a strange, dark space where all of us are strangers,' he said.

'At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with. And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts. And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way,' he added, according to Variety.

The audience cheered and laughed at the obvious Chalamet dig, and Spielberg noted with a smile: 'And we want that to be sustained. We want that to go on forever.'
