This week in PC games: John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, and a myth-inspired match-3 game where you combine three dogs into Cerberus

What we're feeding the Maw

Sadly, I must report that Edwin has once again been eaten by the Maw. I want to say it was through some devious ruse but, reader, it was not. As Edwin worked the gaps between the Maw's canines with the 8-foot toothpick, one of the Maw's smaller tentacles slipped behind our news editor and tapped him on the shoulder. Edwin turned his head. It was only for a moment, but it was all that was needed to gobble him up.

Not to worry, Edwin will surely have worked his way out of one of the Maw's orifices (orifici?) and be back on duty shortly.

In his stead, let me provide this week's delivery of games.

Monday 9th March

  • If you like your tower defense with a side helping of mining, much as you find in Dome Keeper and Wall World, then have a gander at Iter-8. It took my fancy when I gave it a play lately.
  • When Nic (RPS in peace) saw dungeon crawler Thysiastery he called it "an anime Legend Of Grimrock". I played a touch last week and accidentally made an offering of all of my warrior's blood to an ancient god, turning the muscly fighter into a drained husk on the dungeon floor.
  • Pluto (pictured) may be a roguelike deckbuilder like so many other releases currently, but it's the only game I can think of that has put gnarly wizard fingers so front and center.

Tuesday 10th March

  • Pitching itself as The Expanse meets Mount and Blade, I feel the need to tell Spacefleet: Heat Death's developers that horses make terrible astronauts. However, look past equine shortcomings and you'll find an open star system where you can trade, chase down bounties, or build a fleet.
  • Galactic Vault puts you in the shoes of a space bank robber fighting hordes of robots to loot corporation holdings. While not an imm sim or featuring the same flair as Void Bastards, the roguelike space robbery gives me a frisson of the same vibes.
  • One day job simulator makers will run out of careers, but not today. Ranger's Path: National Park Simulator sees you walking and driving about a nature reserve saying 'Steady now' to rowdy visitors, picking up litter, and, hopefully, dealing with the enjoyable exploits of one Yogi Bear.

Wednesday 11th March

  • If you've ever wanted to lead a prince through a dangerous wood, shapeshifting between a sweet, handholding princess and a scary wolf that can wail on any forest creatures that threaten the young monarch, then The Liar Princess And The Blind Prince is one for you.

Thursday 12th March

  • If I had all of the power I would simply demand time after time that game developers make new versions of John Carpenter's The Thing, but if they must have free reign then I will make peace with John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, a four-player co-op shooter from the team that made the Left 4 Dead-like World War Z.
  • While it doesn't look to be aiming for the same scale of the X series, as a pilot in Stellar Wander DX you have a galaxy at your feet to make your fortune as a trader or a bounty hunter. In my book, there's always more room for spacefighter games.
  • In a game that looks to be a little like Spiritfarer and Viva Pinata, Collector's Cove has you set sail in a floating farm that attracts different creatures to your bow. Don't expect the same exploration of grief, mind.
  • Now, if you do want an exploration of grief, play Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake. It is, as the title may give away, a remake of 2001's Fatal Frame 2. Help some twins escape a ghost-filled village.

Friday 13th March

  • If you want to improve your typing and scare yourself silly, there is finally an option open to you other than Typing Of The Dead or playing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing while sat on a chair suspended above a dunk tank filled with gunge like it's a 90s game show. Dyping Escape is a horror game where an ethereal set of eyes tells you what words to type – will you follow its orders? I can't imagine anything will go wrong if you do.
  • I've played a little of Mythmatch, the match-3 game set in mythical ancient Greece, and I am pleased to report that if you combine three dogs you create a Cerberus.
  • Piece By Piece is a puzzle platformer where you assemble levels from jigsaw pieces. It looks to be a little brain bendy and it's presented in a nice package, so it arrives just in time for a spooky Friday.

What are the RPS team up to, I hear you ask over the sound of Edwin's muffled screams from inside the belly of The Maw? Mark and Jeremy are both off for the first half of the week, but upon their return they will enter their respective news and guides mines. The mines are adjacent so they can hear each other pickaxing away in neighboring tunnels. Edwin will maybe play Slay The Spire for the first time. I will almost definitely provide some thoughts on what I've played of it so far. Dion, Callum, and Ollie are moving from Resi to another game they won't speak the name of, only making complaints about the amount of sand it is living in their guide-writing boots. And James is out on the hills shepherding freelancers. He left while it was still dark and comes back after we've all gone to bed. It's a lonely job, but someone has to do it.
