The long-awaited reveal of Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie comes as a massive reveal to those concerned about the fan-favorite character's role in the film. Of course, there's been little secret that the friendly green dinosaur and Mario's trusty sidekick would be on hand for the sequel to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The post-credits scene for The Super Mario Bros. Movie made that abundantly clear, and marketing for their cosmic adventure erased any lingering doubts of his involvement. That said, there were still reasons to wonder about the approach The Super Mario Galaxy Movie would take with him, but his introduction in the trailer has provided some much-needed assurances.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Promises Yoshi Will Be Accurate To The Games
Since there's not much spoken dialogue in the Super Mario games, it made sense that when building its world, The Super Mario Bros. Movie would have to inject personalities into certain characters. And it ultimately did move in that direction with a handful of key players in the story, including Mario, Bowser, and Donkey Kong, often with the intention of adding humor.
Thanks to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, there's a sense that Yoshi won't be receiving a similar treatment. In the trailer, he can be heard saying his own name, which is his normal form of communication in Super Mario and Yoshi titles. That draws a fine distinction between what it did with the usually silent Donkey Kong.
Yoshi doesn't need to talk to Mario and Luigi to be a complete character in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Relying on his "adorable" appearance, friendly demeanor, ability to grab objects with his tongue, swallow enemies whole, and his close bond with Mario, will be all the film needs to make its Yoshi into a likable - and even beloved - character.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Already Setting Up One Of Yoshi's Best Stories
Adding to the evidence that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is poised to do right by Yoshi is the end of the trailer, which shows him in the company of Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and Toad while they're being accosted by a tyrannosaurus rex. This pays homage to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the game that followed Yoshi as he protected Mario during the character's infancy.
This added a level of depth to their relationship, as it meant that Yoshi had been his protector even during Mario's earliest days. Of course, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is unlikely to insert Yoshi into Mario's backstory, but if it finds a way to turn Mario and Luigi into their baby forms, it can force Yoshi to demonstrate how he can be a capable hero in his own right, and not just Mario's sidekick.
