ABC changed The Rookie season 8's release schedule, but while it remains divisive, it is actually a blessing in disguise. Now used to its midseason premiere, the Alexi Hawley-created procedural now has the ball rolling during the 2025-2026 network TV programming, having already released five episodes. The people over at Mid-Wilshire have been busy, both with personal and professional challenges, resulting in a string of solid offerings from The Rookie thus far.

The Rookie being pushed back to a winter premiere has largely worked for ABC. It has become one of the most-watched shows on the network, on top of its streaming success. Since adopting this release model, the LA-based procedural has been a part of the broadcaster's Tuesday primetime lineup. That was still the case when The Rookie season 8 premiered, but not anymore.

The Rookie Moved To Mondays In The Middle Of Season 8

After just three episodes, ABC moved The Rookie season 8 from Tuesday to Monday nights, but still on its 10 PM ET timeslot. Because ABC was reshuffling its programming, it was to give way to an upcoming freshman series, RJ Decker, starring Scott Speedman. By adding it to the lineup of established shows like Will Trent and High Potential, the network increases its exposure and, potentially, the chances of success.

While The Rookie is an established part of ABC's programming, it's not fully immune to negative impacts of change. The show has never aired on a Monday night. It was only on Sundays for a season and a half, and then spent the entirety of its run on Tuesdays. According to Nielsen data provided by TV journalist Matt Mitovich, The Rookie season 8's ratings dipped 7% when it moved to Mondays, posting 3.43 million viewers total audience (in Live+Same Day numbers).

How The Rookie Season 8's Schedule Change Saves It From A Scheduling Snafu

Despite the scheduling change, there's a silver lining to The Rookie's move to Mondays. Looking at ABC's schedule for Tuesdays, the network has preempted its usual lineup for a relatively lengthy break. While not as long as the traditional holiday hiatus or summer off-season, the current schedule sees High Potential season 2 at 9 PM ET and its following hour, which The Rookie previously inhabited, not airing new episodes until March 3.

Finally! ABC Explains Why Bailey Never Felt Right On The Rookie

Despite being a series regular, Bailey Nune has been a polarizing character, and ABC finally explains the reason why on The Rookie season 8.

This means that if Nolan and the rest of Mid-Wilshire stuck with their previous air day, chances are that it would also have gone on a break. ABC hasn't released any official reason for the programming disruption, but it likely has something to do with the ongoing 2026 Winter Olympics, which NBC is primarily covering. High Potential season 2 going on a break was easier to understand, considering that it has been on the air since fall 2025, but it would have been so frustrating for The Rookie, since it just started its year.
