The Rookie is headed for an interesting future on ABC, and how season 8 has played out thus far is making it more baffling. One of the two scripted series saved for a midseason premiere during the 2025-2026 TV cycle, the LA-based procedural has come a long way since it debuted in 2018. While Nathan Fillion's John Nolan remains a central figure in its storytelling, The Rookie has now diversified its narrative, also fleshing out other players on the project.

Police procedurals are a staple of network TV. In fact, the longest-running scripted shows on TV such as Law & Order: SVU season 27 and NCIS season 23 both fall under the category. That said, ABC's The Rookie feels different from those old-school shows, as it prioritizes the storytelling balance between its professional plots and personal arcs. The shift proves to be a winning move for ABC, as the Alexi Hawley-created show is among the most successful shows on TV right now.

The Rookie Season 9 Is Expected To Have Major Budget Cuts

Considering The Rookie season 8's commercial and critical success, it shouldn't come as a surprise that ABC is reportedly in the process of renewing the show for season 9. That's a major win for the procedural, especially as the competition for primetime slots on traditional broadcasting becomes very tight. Unfortunately, it isn't all good news. In conjunction with The Rookie's season 9 renewal comes budget cuts for the series.

Cost-cutting isn't new on network TV, but it usually happens to long-running shows with veteran cast members. While specifics are still uncertain about this matter, it's safe to say that The Rookie will follow Grey's Anatomy's footsteps in this regard. This means a shorter run overall and/or a decrease in episodic appearances for series regulars. As an example of the latter, Caterina Scorsone's Amelia took a leave of absence on Grey's Anatomy season 22.

The Rookie Season 9's Budget Cut Is Confusing After Season 8's Expensive International Premiere

ABC made the extended wait for The Rookie season 8 by opening the year with a groundbreaking international episode. Filmed in Prague, "Czech Mate" was an anomaly on network TV, where shows don't typically shoot outside the country. Primarily, it's because police procedruals are tied to their choice of location, but it's also because it doesn't need that kind of big spectacle. Instead, traditional shows come up with specials via big storylines or even crossovers.

The Rookie Season 8 Disappointing Schedule Change Is A Blessing In Disguise

ABC made the unexpected decision to change The Rookie season 8's release schedule, but it actually saves the show from programming snafu.

Disney and ABC awarding Hawley and The Rookie the budget for the season 8 premiere made sense if you look at its viewership numbers. The writers also found a solid reason for the international sting. Now, however, it's baffling that the network was willing to make that financially possible and then slash its budget the next year.

As compelling as The Rookie's cases are, its characters and the ensemble chemistry that keep people coming back week after week. With regard to budgetary concerns, it would be better to have the show a longer run with the complete ensemble regularly involved, rather than a one-time international-set outing.
