Lucasfilm has finally kicked The Mandalorian and Grogu's marketing campaign into overdrive with the release of a fresh trailer. Following the film's divisive Super Bowl spot, this week brought a proper full The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer that showed more glimpses of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda's upcoming big screen adventure.

There's plenty to discuss with the footage, such as Din Djarin's unmasking so the movie can more prominently feature Pascal's face. A greater spotlight on the action while maintaining the fun vibes of Din and Grogu's journey is present, as is the reveal of Martin Scorsese's surprise Star Wars role. But the overarching theme of the trailer is notable, as it backs up a popular theory.

The Mandalorian & Grogu's Trailer Teases Grogu's Future Without Din Djarin

The big swerve of The Mandalorian was that it wasn't strictly a bounty hunter show about a lone hired gun in Mandalorian armor; it was actually a father-son story where Din becomes the parental figure for Grogu. The three seasons revolved around Din protecting the child from danger and helping him develop his Force-sensitivity. The pairing is the foundation from which all their stories are born, and that's no different with The Mandalorian and Grogu.

However, the latest trailer takes some time to highlight that this will not always be the case. Din is heard saying, "The kid will live centuries beyond me," referencing how long Yoda's species lives, with Grogu already 50 years old despite his child-like appearance. It's long been inevitable that the tiny Force-user will outlive the Mandalorian, but now Star Wars is directly acknowledging this fate.

Din goes on to say, "I won't always be around to protect him," highlighting how the kid will have to take care of himself at some point. Even though Pascal's character previously left the child behind so he could train with Luke Skywalker, this is his understanding that, for one reason or another, he won't always be able to keep Grogu from harm.

These lines are direct examples of The Mandalorian and Grogu teasing Grogu's future without Din. It seems unlikely that the franchise will split them up again (repeating The Mandalorian season 2's ending), but death could be what keeps them apart forever. And if Grogu is the future, then it's Din who could die protecting the alien child he officially adopted one last time in the new movie.

Even before The Mandalorian & Grogu's trailer had Din talk about Grogu's life without him, there's been a prevailing theory that this could be where the character's story ends.

For some, the Din Djarin death speculation is directly tied to Dave Filoni's involvement in the film, as he serves as a producer and co-writer. (His influence may be even greater now that he's the head of Lucasfilm, replacing Kathleen Kennedy.) Filoni is known for killing fan-favorite characters, and even though The Mandalorian & Grogu is Jon Favreau's baby, the Star Wars veteran left some fans wondering if Din will receive the same fate of Kanan Jarrus or Ahsoka Tano (before her return).

Pascal is another factor behind some of the theories. He returned to physically play Din for this movie, but he was completely absent from The Mandalorian season 3's production, only participating with his voice. There have been questions about how committed he is to keep playing the masked character, especially as he's lined up new franchise opportunities, such as playing Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There's also a matter of Din's uncertain future beyond The Mandalorian and Grogu. Favreau has suggested this could be where his time with the galaxy far, far away ends. If that is the case, as The Mandalorian season 4 is not confirmed, then Din dying would be a way for him to wrap up this character's journey as he goes.

And now that the movie is confirmed to explore the concept of a definitive split for Din and Grogu, there's more support for the theory. The Mandalorian and Grogu could really be where Din Djarin's story ends, in what would likely be a very emotional goodbye should it happen.

Will Star Wars Really Kill Din Djarin In The Mandalorian & Grogu?

Yet, killing Din in The Mandalorian and Grogu would also be a risk, one that could keep Lucasfilm from going through with that decision.

Din and Grogu are both very popular characters for modern audiences, and while they are two different characters, they are often seen as one. The strength of their relationship is one of the main driving forces behind fans' admiration for them. Hardly anyone really wants to see them go off on solo adventures. That's certainly why Favreau moved to reunite them so quickly after season 2's separation.

Grogu will absolutely one day have stories that exist beyond Din's lifespan, but moving to that point now could feel rushed. There are still plenty of adventures that they can go on together. And even if there is a need for them to go their separate ways for the purposes of other Star Wars projects, Din doesn't have to die to make that possible.

Lucasfilm should also want to keep him alive selfishly. Should this movie prove to be a big hit, killing one of the two leads could prove to be a major mistake that hurts the chance at launching a new big-screen franchise.

Considering the variety of ways Din's death could cause potential backlash (which is the last thing Star Wars needs), it would still be surprising for The Mandalorian and Grogu to deliver that fatal blow to Pascal's character, even if the trailer is hinting toward that eventuality.
