The Lord of the Rings is known for many things, not least creating the modern fantasy genre as a whole, but in terms of the narrative, its the battles that take center stage throughout. From Helm's Deep, to Pelennor Fields and the culminating battle at the Black Gate, clashes between orcs and humans really drive home just how high the stakes are.

The battles are beautifully described in the books and they do a great job of creating a visual for readers to think through when working through them. At the same time, Peter Jackson's masterful trilogy brought them to life further, to the point where we now have a pretty good idea of what they are all like in our heads, as fans.

Now, there's another release on the way that celebrates those conflagrations, and it comes from one of the best adaptations of the work to date.

War Of The Ring Gets A Huge New Expansion

In case you haven't come across it yet, the War of The Ring: Second Edition is a grand-strategy board game for 2–4 that tasks players with guiding the Fellowship of the Ring and the allied armies, with the ultimate goal of safely seeing Frodo to Mount Doom. At the same time, a Shadow Player takes control of the forces of evil, winning by either hunting down and corrupting the ringbearer or destroying enough of the free peoples of Middle-earth.

Happily, there's a new expansion on the way in December that puts battles at the forefront of its thinking. War of the Ring: Sieges of Middle-earth is the fourth official release for the game, and pre-orders are currently open through the Ares Games e-commerce website.

In letting fans know a little about what they can expect, the manufacturer posted the following description:

"During the War of the Ring, the strongholds of the Free Peoples faced their darkest hour, under assault by the relentless armies of the Shadow. Siege towers advanced against mighty walls; catapults battered the defenders day after day. Yet these assaults – those that took place, and those that might have – were decided not only by swords and engines of war, but by the endurance and courage of the brave souls standing against overwhelming odds.

"Sieges Of Middle-Earth is the fourth expansion for the War of The Ring: Second Edition board game, focusing on the siege battles against the main strongholds of the Free Peoples. New game mechanisms bring those desperate battles to the forefront of the conflict: the Shadow player can field powerful siege engines to smash fortifications and spread despair among the defenders, while the Free Peoples player may attempt heroic feats, lead bold sorties, and inspire last stands that can turn the tide of battle.

"New components include plastic figures, special dice, tokens, and cards to add to the core game, expanding the strategic options of both players and enhancing storytelling possibilities."

The only thing to be aware of is that you will need the base game to make use of the release, with the sets currently priced at $89.99 for War of the Ring, and $39.99 for Sieges of Middle-earth.

There's A Lot More Lord Of The Rings On The Way

That could be the perfect way to fill the time while we wait for the new Gollum movie, while the third season of Rings of Power is also set to debut very soon, on November 11. That's set to feature a significant time jump, so it will be interesting to see how things have changed in the intervening period.
