Star Trek: Deep Space Nine really is an adaptation of the franchise unlike anything we have seen before or since. The usual formula of having a starship and regular crew exploring the farthest reaches of the galaxy was gone, replaced by a considerably more stationary approach that draws on the depth of the Star Trek universe as it was at that time.
The overall darker tone might have taken a little bit of adjusting to as a viewer, but what it eventually created was a show that felt much more high stakes than anything fans were expecting. As such, it holds a bit of a special place in the heart of the community as a whole, and any time it returns in any form, it's worth knowing about.
Well, as it happens, that has come to pass, and it's in the form of one of the best card games around.
Star Trek Fluxx Brings Deep Space Nine Back
Over on the Looney Labs website, the company confirmed the return of their beloved host of Star Trek Fluxx releases. That includes the Deep Space Nine set, which brings in many of the show's most iconic characters, and lets players experience the Star Trek universe in a whole new medium.
They also posted a description of the game, so fans know what to expect if they do decide to commit:
"Explore the farthest reaches of the universe in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Fluxx! Work alongside Benjamin Sisko, Quark, Jadzia Dax, Worf and all your other favorite space station personnel while you try to gather Gold-Pressed Latinum and study the Wormhole, but watch out for nasty Surprises and Creepers like the Founders and the Jem'Hadar!
"It all begins with one basic rule: Draw one card, play one card. You start with a hand of three cards, add the card you drew to your hand, and then choose one card to play, following the directions written on your chosen card. As cards are drawn and played from the deck, the rules of the game change from how many cards are drawn, played, or even how many cards you can hold at the end of your turn."
This all comes about as part of the wider celebrations around Star Trek's 60th anniversary, with the Fluxx releases returning to stores and online on October 20.
Star Trek Doesn't Have Too Much On The Way
While there's a huge amount of 60th anniversary merch coming, in the wider world of Star Trek, things are looking quite so positive in terms of upcoming adaptations on either the big or small screen.
Both Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are drawing to a close next year, with no further series planned at the time of writing. There is a big movie reboot in the early stages of production, but don't expect to see much of that before 2028. We are, however, getting a brand new game on October 20 called Outposts Unknown, and a Next Generation-era Star Trek horror game called Shadow Frontier in 2027.
