The Last of Us star Kaitlyn Dever says she has prepared herself as Season 3 enters production. The actress made her debut in Season 2, where she plays Abby, a young woman seeking revenge after Joel killed her father in Season 1. While she was rarely seen in Season 2, Season 3 is where her character will take center stage as Abby becomes the primary focus.
Dever has revealed in a recent interview that production for The Last of Us Season 3 is about to begin and that she's aware how her role has increased in this upcoming installment. She also notes that the next season is something she's "excited for the fans to see," as it will cover her perspective before her confrontation with Ellie in the Season 2 finale.
“I’m getting mentally and physically prepped right now. I go up in a couple days, actually, to start prep over there. I’m so excited to kind of take on a much bigger role in the season. The fans are really going to like it, I think, the shifting perspective onto Abby, getting some more context onto her storyline and going back in time with this season. So, I’m very excited for the fans to see it.”
The Last of Us Season 3 will continue to adapt the 2020 video game, The Last of Us Part II. Following the game's original storytelling technique, Season 3 will shift to Abby's perspective, showcasing what her time in Seattle is like before confronting Ellie. Before Season 3 entered production, it was announced that Neil Druckmann, the creator of The Last of Us, had left the show and would not be involved in Season 3. He said his exit wasn't abrupt and that working on the TV adaptation of this hit video game was a goal he had achieved.
What Is 'The Last of Us' About?
The Last of Us is an HBO series based on the 2013 award-winning video game of the same name. The show takes place in a post-apocalyptic America, where society has succumbed to a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus, which has infected humans and taken control of their bodies. What makes this show compelling to watch is that it doesn't focus heavily on the survival aspect or the fungus-infected zombies. But instead, it puts a spotlight on the relationships and choices people make after an apocalypse, as well as on attempts to rebuild society through different leadership methods.
Season 1 follows two survivors, Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal), a father who lost his daughter during the initial outbreak, and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who's immune to the infection. The show follows this duo as they head to Utah, where a group called the Fireflies thinks it can create a cure for the disease using Ellie's immunity, but there's a risk that she could die. Season 2 continues where Season 1 left off, with Joel and Ellie now having a strained relationship, especially as Ellie learns the truth about why Joel saved her from the Fireflies. However, the rekindling of their relationship is cut short when Abby arrives to confront Joel, which leads Ellie to make her way to Seattle for revenge.
The Last of Us Season 3 has yet to announce an official release date. In the meantime, Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on HBO Max. Follow Collider to stay updated.
