The Devil Wears Prada 2 features several returning stars from the first film, and the sequel is a significant career first for one actor. 2003's The Devil Wears Prada was a critical and commercial hit. The film currently holds a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and earned over $326 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.

Based on the book by Lauren Weisberger, the film starred Anne Hathaway as Andrea Sachs, an aspiring journalist who earns a job as an assistant for Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly, the ruthless editor-in-chief for Runway, a prestigious fashion magazine. The film was directed by David Frankel, and also starred Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, Miranda's other assistant, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, Runway's art director.

20 years after the events of Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway, Streep, Blunt, and Tucci are returning for the sequel. According to Variety, the film "follows Priestly as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and as she faces off against Blunt's character, now a high powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs." Andrea also returns as Runway's new feature's editor.

Streep was previously nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Miranda in the first film. Streep has been nominated for an Oscar many times, and has won three, but The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be the first time she has reprised a role for which she received an Oscar nomination.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is The First Time Meryl Streep Has Played An Oscar-Nominated Role Twice

Streep is one of the most accomplished actors ever. She has the most Oscar nominations of any actor with 21, winning three for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice, and The Iron Lady. However, Streep traditionally isn't an actor who plays the same role twice. The only sequel she has ever reprised a role for is Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, where she returned as Donna.

However, her return as Miranda in The Devil Wears Prada 2 marks the first time that she has played an Academy Award-nominated role twice. As seen in the trailer, it looks like Streep is picking up right where she left off in the role, with Miranda seemingly forgetting that Andrea and Emily ever worked for her. Based on the synopsis, Miranda could be more vulnerable as she needs help to keep Runway successful in changing times. She may not be at the height of her power anymore, and it will be interesting to see how Streep portrays that.

Could Streep Receive Another Nomination?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, only six actors have ever been nominated for the same role twice. Those six actors are Bing Crosby as Father O'Malley in Going My Way and The Bells of St Mary's, Peter O'Toole as King Henry II in Becket and The Lion in Winter, Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Paul Newman as "Fast Eddie" Felson in The Hustler and The Color of Money, and Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa in Rocky and Creed.

It's a rarity, but that doesn't mean Streep can't score a nomination. The Academy frequently gives Streep nominations, and it wouldn't be surprising if she receives another one for this film. It may depend on how the sequel is received, but so far, it seems like it is a hit with critics. The Devil Wears Prada 2 currently holds a 76% RT critic score, around the same range as the original film. It may be too early to tell if the film will be an awards contender, but Streep may have a chance of earning another nomination.
