Sometimes a series enters the mad world of video games that really just seems to hit the right note in every department. Whether it's the near-perfect gameplay design of a release like Baldur's Gate 3 or the narrative excellence and beautiful open-world of a game like Red Dead Redemption 2, there are some titles that just universally hit with players the world over.

One of the games that has an absolute right to claim that kind of status is the original The Last of Us. Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic zombie epic is still seen as one of the better narrative experiences of all-time, and it's an absolute must-play if you're a fan of the genre overall. Happily, PlayStation players might not even have to fork out any extra money if they fancy playing in 2026.

As a bit of a public service announcement, The Last of Us is available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers right now, as part of the wider catalog on offer to players who are signed up to the service.

Though the recent price increases have obviously been a little galling for many of us, it's still an offering that the vast majority of players are signed up to, and there are few better ways to get as much value for money, in terms of the quality of the game, than the original Last of Us release.

The story follows Joel and Ellie as they attempt to navigate a world in which the human population has been ravaged by a fungal virus that causes them to essentially become zombies. In a post-apocalyptic world, they have to do everything they can to survive against that threat, and the arguably even greater danger posed by the humans who had made it through up to that point.

It's all about the story really, but the gameplay is very good in its own right, and often goes as the more underrated portion of the overall offering. The blend of stealth and combat is rewarding, and you'll probably find yourself spooked by a sudden enemy more than once.

Happily, if you really end up enjoying your time with the first game, The Last of Us Part II is also available to Extra and Premium subscribers, allowing you to continue the tale to what currently serves as its conclusion. It probably doesn't quite reach the same lofty heights as the original, but it's well worth a go to see how everything plays out.
