Nearly two years after that major finale, your favorite detective returns very soon, and we have a first look that confirms as much. As one of the BBC's and Britbox's most sought-after British mystery series, it has received nothing but love since its premiere in September 2024, with critics raving about its comforting tone as reflected in its near-perfect 97% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the same time, the crime drama is a ratings favorite, attracting almost 10 million viewers in its first month of airing and becoming the BBC's biggest new scripted series since 2022.

With six episodes so far, Ludwig is a must-watch detective series that blends comedy and drama effortlessly. Its first season ran until October 2024 and became available to U.S. audiences on BritBox in March 2025, roughly six months later. Within the same month of its original premiere, it was renewed for a second season by BBC One. A premiere date for Ludwig Season 2 has yet to be announced, but in the meantime, BritBox has revealed the first look, including images of returning and new stars. See the photos below.

How Well Do You Know the Near-Perfect 'Ludwig'?

Centered on David Mitchell's titular character, John "Ludwig" Taylor, a professional word puzzle creator, Ludwig sees him go undercover as his missing detective twin brother. While searching for clues about his brother's disappearance, he discovers that legal mysteries are really just puzzles — which he is uniquely equipped to solve. Season 2 will pick up right from where things were left at the end of Season 1, with Ludwig now a Crime Scene Consultant working on "impossible" crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority.

As recently teased, John will no longer have to masquerade as his twin brother, James, in the upcoming season, as he is openly more "Ludwig" than ever — brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else. However, James is still missing, and now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

In addition to Mitchell, Ludwig's next season will see Maxwell Martin return as Ludwig's sister-in-law and closest friend, Lucy. Also returning are Dipo Ola as DCI Russell Carter, Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler, and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville.

Ludwig Season 2 will air later this year. Stick with Collider for an official premiere date.
