The Gorillaz's upcoming 2026 short film is only days away from its release. The popularity of the Gorillaz is one that has transcended the tests of time and genre, as the band's success has persisted long after its creation in 1998, despite - or perhaps even because of - the songs under the Gorillaz name spanning a wide range of different sounds, tones and musical genres.
Some things have remained consistent about the Gorillaz, though, with one of the most key being that the group is a virtual band wherein the real-life members of the team are represented via cartoon fictional alter egos, who have their own separate personalities, lives and stories that have been explored through the years. As such, the prospect of a Gorillaz movie is a decidedly exciting one.
The 2026 Gorillaz Short Film Releases On February 27
February 20, 2026 brought with it a trailer for a short film centered around the animated band known as the Gorillaz, titled The Mountain, The Moon Cave, and The Sad God.
Based on the first trailer for The Mountain, The Moon Cave, and The Sad God, the film will revolve around a relatively self-contained story showing the band going adventuring in hopes of creating a movie, only to find themselves in conflict with a mysterious force that presents a danger to them along the way.
The playful, faux-vintage tone of the trailer - and the exciting snippets of the animation we have thus far gotten to see - bodes well for The Mountain, The Moon Cave, and The Sad God, which is set to release on February 27, making it only just days away from its debut.
Why The Gorillaz Movie Is A Big Deal
FortniteHistorically, the Gorillaz's brand revolves in no small way around the unique art direction taken with the group, and the fact the group's music is able to reflect the internal lore of the fictional versions of the band, who have their own respective arcs and stories - which in turn adds more dimensions to both the Gorillaz's songs and the reasons people become invested in the group.
While the Gorillaz have had plenty of their own dedicated animations beforehand - both in the band's music videos, and in shorts detailing the group's day-to-day life - crafting a full dedicated short film is an exciting next step, and one that looks as though it will be just as beautifully stylistic and eye-catching as many of the band's biggest music videos.
